Can you imagine how exciting it would be to drive down this road at 30mph

No. Bring it on.

The road we live on in SE London is on a steep hill, one way (down the hill) with a bend at the bottom followed by a 90 degree right hand. Way too many cocks go too fast down it. 4 accidents in the last year where fkwits have failed to make the last turn and hit a wall.

20 would be good. It's in the town centre ffs.

It's not just our road either, there are a fair few around here that would benefit from a reduced speed limit.

Why would you want urban driving to be 'exciting'?

Looking at that picture, 30mph would be a little hairy anyway, so the change in limit isn't going to make any difference.

You often get a road like that with a 30 limit and sometimes where they cant be bothered it's left at NSL
Do you think most people would drive at any different speed down it due to the limit?

The problem is the Propoganda related to speed kills. By NOT saying "What ever the speed limit is you need to use your own judgement, and take care, because you are responsible for your own actions" instead of saying "You can't be trusted, to make your own judgement on safe speed, so we are going to do it for you"

This means, I'm safe as long as I keep to the limit. Get rid of all speed limits and it would force everyone to think.

Somewhere between the 2 ideas is the best compromise.

Do most people take more care crossing say a 20 road, a 30 road or NSL.
Which makes you look twice or maybe 3 times?

Indeed. If the speed limit is NSL, but the road is through a hamlet, it's raining, there's MUD on the road, and blind farm entrances, and a bend coming up, you don't overtake do you ? The words of the judge in Jackson Vs Campbell 2004.

Use you judgement based on good training.

At least they say on that site that speed bumps need not be placed in a 20 Zone.

Driving around town now in 30mph zones at 30mph is becoming more and more difficult - mainly due to parked vehicles.

In most if not all of the 20 zones in the town where I live, if the limit was increased back to 30 and speed bumps removed you still wouldn't be able to get near that limit most of the time.

I know I'm not going to be popular but some people are just not capable of thinking for themselves and need a sign to tell them so (it's debateable whether their lack of decision making intelligence actually gives them the qualifications to drive a motor vehicle but that is a different topic for another day...)

Was driving pax in Gillingham (I know... I know...) and it was around 3.30pm, school kicking out time, around small terraced roads with banks of cars either side. 20mph was the quickest you would want to be going but still, she carried on doing 30 everywhere...

However (Warning: man admits speeding on public road shocker; or is it just bravado?) whilst driving home on a 4 lane motorway at 9 P.M on a lovely summers evening driving at 85 indicated was "bloody dangerous because the speed limit is 70 so its dangerous to do more than 70..."

People who cannot assess risk need to be told. Kinda like letting children play in an urban electrical substation; they don't know the danger so they need to be told with big, scary signs... Unfortunately the rest of the driving population also need to put up with being treated like a child...

But a person who believes if they stick to a speed limit they are safe should be removed from the road IMHO.

Pits will be along shortly to tell you that your passenger does not exist too!

Gets my vote, as it would take at least 50% of drivers off the roads!

The hamlet part of that is probably irrelevant smile
Similarly if it's a 20 limit and you're told on the TV if you knock someone down they'll be ok, or if you're playing in the treet and you run out in front of a car you'll be ok - which is really the most dangerous place to be? How many people are run over and survive?
Now check the stats

Youd think 'appropriately' would cover that, but even when youve judged it to be appropriate you take more risks than you would in a 30.
If you have a safe 30 road with no accidents, the stats can only go one way if you change it to a 20, and change in your behaviour helps make it happen.

See what you make of these stats from road casualty great britain 2009
2009 killed or seriously injured (A roads and other roads)
30 limits 13546, 20 limits 207
i.e. approx 65:1
If there are more than 65 times as many miles of 30 than 20, 30mph is safer coffee

Obviously it is all based on a thin premise....however the temerity of linking the speed limit in residential areas to our success in the 2020 Olympics is hilarious, marketing bull at it's best (worst)

I thought this thread was going to be about the growth in car wheel sizes, who needs more than a 20" wheel?

I say stop all the poncing about and systematic destruction of our "speedy" road networks and go straight for the jugular with the "1 is fun" campaign.
