My OH has a 1995 MX-5, which gets very little use, in its role as a weekend car. As the weather was nice today, we took it for a spin - which turned out to be the most terrifying passenger ride of my life!

It has developed a horrendous wheel wobble at anything above 40mph, which escalates the longer it gets driven, into a loud knocking, with violent kicking back through the steering wheel. When we got back, we found the off-side front wheel was red hot; I took off the front wheels and switched them to the back in case a tyre was out of shape (they have been balanced recently), the only thing of note was that with the wheel off the the near side front brake disc seemed a little loose with a bit of movement in it; moreso than the OSF.

My local garage have looked at it before (it has always wobbled a little at speed but they said it wasn't a problem) but now the car is undriveable above 35mph. Does anyone have any clues as to where to start looking?

Something as violent as that must be pretty simple to diagnose. The disc might not be secured but that will be corrected once the wheel is in place, if it's not then that's your issue, it could be a ballpoint, it could be tca bushes, it could be anything that holds the assembly to the car??

A hot wheel will either be a sticking caliper or fecked wheel bearing. Should be a pretty easy fix.
