We took delivery of a new edition nearly 8 months ago and i've been debating for a while to get the better half a better but more importantly safer car for them both.

I've suggested we swap cars as I have a larger Passat but she likes her Peugeot plus she says the Passat is too big.

I've been wracking my brains over what is a medium sized safe car and I can only think of a VW Golf MK5, I know Renaults are meant to be good but there is no way I'd get the missus in one and anything too big is a no no so no Volvo V70 or anything like that.

She said she likes Peugeots 207's but are these a big step up safety wise from a 206?

Can anyone recommend a well built and solid car that isn't too a tank?

Cheers.

What about an e46 2.0d compact? Not too big, well-built and reasonably cheap to run.

That is true but what about the other idiots on the road?
She is actually one of the most competant drivers i've ever been in a car with.

Mercedes B Class. Lots of room inside, great family car, and very safe. Not so good to drive though...

I think I'd struggle to get one at between 4 and 5k.

There's a hint of sarcasm in this, but also some sound logic. Buy the car she likes best for 2 to 3K and then get it seam welded and caged.
