Passat TDi engine oil

Yes, you will ruin your engine if it's a PD and you use non-PD oil. 507.00 will work in any VAG engine. Most of the 1.9TDI engines are fine on 505.01 though.

Will any old oil really 'ruin' it? I only ask because I feel sorry for the people who bought my MKIV Golf diesel if that's the case http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-751-vw-50501-oil.aspx

Yes, it will. the PD engine camshaft has an extra set of lobes to drive the injectors. As these are under a lot of stress, you need "PD" oil to lubricate it. Camshaft wear is prevalent on these engines if not looked after.
