Baffling, I am surprised by the variety engine oils available.

Can I ruin my car's engine if I just slap in any old diesel oil?

What do the Passat owners on here buy?

I was also surprised to find that it costs £18 a liter!

Yes, you will ruin your engine if it's a PD and you use non-PD oil. 507.00 will work in any VAG engine. Most of the 1.9TDI engines are fine on 505.01 though.

I found Halfords the cheapest for the correct oil for my TDI PD.

Yeah thats where I get mine from, seems to do the job nicely. Has to be fully synth. I used to just chuck any old semi synth. diesel oil in the old one though.

Will any old oil really 'ruin' it? I only ask because I feel sorry for the people who bought my MKIV Golf diesel if that's the case biggrin

Yes, it will. the PD engine camshaft has an extra set of lobes to drive the injectors. As these are under a lot of stress, you need "PD" oil to lubricate it. Camshaft wear is prevalent on these engines if not looked after.

It is a 2007 2.0l TDi, no idea if it is a PD, I pretty sure it is 140 BHP.

Also correct oil is important if it has a DPF fitted although being 2007, I would doubt it
