Last weekend I purchased a new (s/h) car for the missus...

It has a towbar fitted and we need to tow a caravan this weekend from tomorrow (Thursday).

That means I need to get a spare/new rear number plate made. Obviously, I don't, as yet, have the full V5C, just the V5C/2 new-owner counterpart/slip.

Given the rules regarding making plates, will it be possible to get a plate made up today using what I have to hand?

As in "I can get a plate made" or as in "it won't matter using a hand-written plate"? Or something else?

Just unscrew the numberplate from the back of the car and fit it to the caravan whilst it's in tow?

Can you not ask the car dealer you bought it from to provide one?
Unless, of course they dont have the facilities.

Yep. Photocard driver's licence is best as it has the same DVLA-record address on it.

For the reference of anyone else reading, acceptable proof of entitlement can be:
  • the full V5C
  • the V5C/2 tear-off slip
  • a V11 tax reminder
  • a V379 temporary registration certificate
  • the V948 or V750 documents for personalised plates (or V778 for plates on retention)
  • a fleet operator's letter in case of a company car
  • insurance document pertaining to the vehicle in question.
Any one of these with ID for yourself, to show that you're the person named on the documents, is absolutely fine!

You can order one from Demon Plates, they never ask for any documentation, I think their disclaimer is that they are selling 'show plates'.

Not much good to you unless it's BS stamped, or if you need it in the next few days. Watch out for online suppliers - some are good and well-priced, but any plate without the BSAU approval stamp (usually in the bottom right) isn't technically legal.

Don't think you can use an insurance doc, well its not in the DVLA list anyway

Yep, Halfords will do it with an insurance document. I forgot to add to the list that the V11 tax reminder and V379 temporary registration certificate are also fine (now edited) smile

Local shop still does the stick on backgrounds & letters albeit sold not for road use.

This is all I have ever used on my trailer/bike rack light boards.

If the caravan still has a stuck on background on it just peal off the letters & replace with the correct ones.

Hand written numberplates are only allowed if you are towing with a double cab Transit wink
