Just arrived home and my car has started making some odd noises. I noticed it driving through town and it sounds just like something is dragging behind the car. A quick check in my mirrors confirmed no cyclists tangled in my wheels and I continued the short distance home. When cornering it sounds just like a dragged cyclist swinging from one side to the other.

I had a bit of a peek underneath the car when I parked and there is nothing out of place. Over to PH. Any ideas? Could it be a stone in a wheel rim or something more sinister? Car is a mkv golf if that helps

My money is a stone trapped between one of the rear discs and the backing plate. Pretty common on MKV Golfs.

When it happened to me on my R32, I was expecting to find the propshaft dragging on the ground when I got out :-)

Have had gravel caught in front callipers of mk5 golfs after reversing but usually comes out after less than a mile.

Found the cause! I went to see if I could find any evidence of stones trapped in the wheel and found the backing plate behind the rear brake disc had rusted so badly the mounts had rotted away and it was lying on top of the brake assembly. I took the wheel off and pulled it free. now to find a replacement. Any idea what the backing plate actually does?

Thanks for your replies everyone. While my wheel was off I noticed the inside shoulder of the tyre was quite worn (right rear) I also found the left rear was the same. what could cause this? worn bushes? I didnt think there were track rods on the rear to adjust.
