Forgive this for being long winded, but I would appreciate any advice.

I'm 19, work full time, will be going travelling soon so any insurance will be carried over, and as a result I'm prepared to pay a few hundred extra to drive a nice car for a few months. I live with my mum, and we have one car between us. She doesn't drive often, when she does, its wafting territory.

Currently have a pug 406 1.8, in a nice spec. Its been great over the last 3 years, but it needs a lot of repairs, especially since a crash in the winter, and its not worth spending money on, so she's going to the scrappy.

I initially thought of a 406 coupe to replace it with, but the one I was after has sold, and after a chat with mum we decided something diferent might be nice.
We also decided to spend a little more, and get something decent. She likes Jags, and so do I.

So talk to me about X-Types. Mum likes them, I'd prefer an XJ but they are a bit much for her, and I'm happy with the X-type. Don't give a flying fart about mondeo references, I drove the mondeo and thought it was nice, so there.

Looking to spend 2-3 thousand, on an X-type in good condition, with leather seats and a nice colour.

What I'm asking from you, is advice on the purchasing, what to look out for and the such, and of course any viable alternatives from any other brand?

I've got a good PHer mate who I'm sure will help me out in the real world in exhange for beer, which helps.

You could equally pick up a nice Mercedes E Class or C Class for the same money , obviously not a new one , but something similar in age to the Jags you are looking at . Ditto BMW , Audi etc .

It comes down to your personal preference .

I had an XJ at 20 and it was ideal for long runs around the country. Plus insurance was weirdly cheap.

I'd try to bring you mum around to the idea of an XJ but the X-Type is a fine car too.

Top tip.

I suspect an XJ may be a bit long for a new driver on a day to day basis. Your mother would get sick of having it overhanging parking bays and needing big spaces if it were ever to be parallel parked.

The X Type is alright, a Mondeo in a faux-upmarket guise. Mondeo's are an alright drive too, as long as you remember that they are essentially sold as white goods. Probably a bit less pretentious than the X Type. The S Type of a similar vintage is a fairly ugly car but a bit closer to the classic Jaguar idea for me (with it's auto box). The S Type R is also a fearsome car, though you'd not get insured on it.

Buy one at auction... X-Types start from about £800!

The later X-Type Sports are fairly nice cars, but at your budget, a 3.0 S-Type is a much better car, and more of a Jag.

And with regaards to alternatives, £3,000 would get you a lovely petrol C-Class, or a leggy diesel. If it's ride quality you're after, this is where it's at.

For the love of God!!

Why do people say this??

The X-type, when introduced, shared about 20% of the then Mondeo's platform. As if that was a bad thing, as the Mondeo was a good steer. Mostly this was some of the chassis and a few suspension components.
The X-type at launch had a proper 4wd system and a choice of 194bhp 2.5 V6 or 231bhp 3.0. Again, despite similarities to engines available in the Mondeo of the day, the Jag units were heavily re-worked and more powerful.

Only buffoons in pubs, the ones who know best when you're on the bandit, that type, still talk st like "yeah, X-type. Posh Mondeo innit?"

Anyway. To the OP, I'd recommend an X-type 3.0 manual (0-60 in 6.6 seconds!), or an S-type 3.0 auto. Just check gearbox oil and filter has been done on the autos, and look for rust behind the sill covers/bodykit on the X-type. Also check the transfer box and both diffs are quiet. Worth changing all the fluids in these.

If you can up the budget, seek out an S-type 4.2 V8. No worse on fuel than the 3.0, but so much more of an experience.

Good luck! smile

But..but...it was on topgear innit, they're just mondeos rolleyes

However based on that train of thought, have you considered one? Get a lot of toys for the money and they handle surprisingly well (made a few sales rep A4's chicken out of roundabout GP hehe).

The Jaguars are quicker i think as they have more ponies but 226bhp from the ST220 isnt to be sniffed at smile

I really like X-Types.

Diesel are FWD only (a shame frown ) and will likely cost more. The 2.0d is a good motor and frugal though.

Avoid the 2.1 V6, it's not great on fuel, fwd and not that fast. The 2.5 is ok, but tbh honest a 3.0 won't really use much more fuel and is a lot more rapid.

Pre 2003 examples have a limited slip centre diff while post 2003 have an open centre diff and relies on the TCS on each wheel. This IMO affects the handling (in a negative way) and also reduces its AWD ability on slippery surfaces.

Based on this fact I'd be looking for an early 3.0 V6 manual as the drivers choice. Transfer boxes are weak point on all AWD X-Types, so worth reading up on these.

Comparing apples to apples there really isn't perceptible difference. I have experience of Mondeo 2.0D and the X-Type facelift 2.0D and to be honest, interior and exterior aside, there's really nothing in it. Road noise is around the same (the X-Type certainly isn't any quieter), and I actually find the Mondeo handling is slightly sharper yet doesn't loose the comfort the Jaguar engineers tried to design in. I find the X-Types seem to have slightly noisier suspension operation too, which I understand was par for the course, as many went back to dealerships and owners were told it's normal.

Aside from the design I thin the only real difference is snob value. Certainly I worked at Ford's Dunton Product Development centre at the time JLR were still part of the Ford Portfolio, and the cost of the X-Type vs. the actual performance difference was always a running joke internally.

I prefer the Jaguar though, because I am a snob.

Actually Jeremy Clarkson once said somewhere that the X type was very different to the Mondeo.

Jag-war is an American thing is it not? I've only ever heard them referred to as Jag-u-ars or Jags not heard anyone say Jaaaaag in real life? Unless said as a joke.

OP - How about a Series 1, 2 or 3 XJ6? smile They are smaller than the new types (not as wide and not quite as long and have much more class)
