From Maidenhead!?

Trying to avoid a 5.47am train and numerous underground changes.

Any ideas? Could drive and park a few miles out on a simple train route but I've no experience at all of getting into that area of Londinium.

Over to you.

By drive I don't mean right in but just inside the M25 perhaps with a short 20-30 minute hop into town - though it's looking like the only option to do that is driving to Kent.

I'm having to do this Monday for the Olympics.

Cheers and quickest route for me (from the south coast) was drive to Gatwick, park in long stay south for the day and use discounted rail travel to get to Blackheath. Total cost for 2, £25.80. Two train tickets all the way there from home were £97..... Hahahaha!

I really wouldn't want to attempt to drive anywhere near London at the moment. Unless you have very good air con and a CD of whale music in the car....

Suggestion from someone on my desk.

Maidenhead to Waterloo (1 hour 10), then walk the short distance to Waterloo East over the footbridge, then take direct train from Waterloo East to either Greenwich (22 mins) or Blackheath (15-30 mins depending on train boarded) - both stations served by different trains.

Do the boats go to Greenwich from Westminster/Embankment pier? If so, train into Waterloo and then walk to the boat?

Sadly all the river buses are booked until 1pm. We need to be at Greenwich Park for 8am.

What day are you thinking of going? I'd go M25 anticlockwise to junc3, A20 to somewhere like Eltham or Kidbrooke, find a parking spot outside the restricted areas if during the week then train to Blackheath and walk across the heath. DO NOT try any of the stations on the lower line such as Westcombe park or Maze hill, these will be chaos. Alternatively use National rail planner to get train to Paddington or Victoria and train from Victoria or Charing X to Blackheath and then walk, It'll be quicker.

The cycling road race is on too, which might limit how far inside the M25 you want to come.

Perhaps see if you can get overland to somewhere in north london (finsbury park?) that links with the Jubilee line, then sit on that all the way.

Edit: not finsbury park, I was thinking of west hampstead/finchley road

Tomorrow morning, to be there for 8am.

Due to a very kind gesture by a friend my daughter and I have been gifted tickets, hence the lack of planning (that and the fact I'm st)

Looking like Slough>Paddington>Charing Cross>Greenwich is the route of least resistance.

Unless someone can come up with a compelling reason why this is public transport suicide...

Sounds reasonable but be prepared to take in the alternative of Blackheath and walk across the the heath, 15 minutes.
