Kind of an opposite topic to 300bhp/ton's one.
What cars that look fairly normal (or not much different to their mid-spec or 'sport' trim variants) but are ridiculously expensive?

My first thought was the £30k ferrati fiat 500.

It doesn't look much different to a regular 500 or arbarth.

Then I thought perhaps the mk1 focus RS.

To a lay-person they would think its just an ordinary focus with some alloys, but on the used market its got a much higher price tag.

Maserati Quattroporte IV. Looks like an overgrown Alfa 155.

But I still want one.

VW Phaeton I think, I love em but they do look just like a humdrum Passatt.

High spec Golfs like the R32, extraordinarily expensive but look just like a Golf!

hmmm extraordinarily expensive? not sure i'd go along with that and I'm no Bill Gates.

Have to say the R32 is a poor example as well, tail pipes being moved to centre, chrome a plenty and R32 badges front and rear, very different from a normal Golf to all but the most myopic.

Relative to a normal Golf,or indeed almost any other hatchback they seem a tad pricey to me!

Point taken on the dressing up bits though but still a car that to the casual glance looks a lot more normal than other cars from its price bracket.

I'll chuck in all higher end Astons, yes they look expensive but most people in the street, myself included, would struggle to differntiate one from a more cooking Aston for haf the price if there is such a thing.

An average 1/3/CLC/C/A3/A4/etc/etc.

Look normal/boring as hell but will likely be more than 30k

I recently sold my Cayman S for 26k but people regularly assumed it to be a 40k+ car... which it was when I bought it! grrrr

Sticking with hatches for second, the 130i I'm currently running has absolutely NO distinguishing features from a 118iMSport but comes in at over 30K in decent spec... practically invisible.

BMW M3? How many (non-PH) people think it's anything other than a normal 3-series?

No porsche is exactly cheap though.
