Clio 172 alternatives

I currently have a diesel due to my 80 mile commute, I'm changing jobs soon and this will result in a shorter journey. My budget is 1-1.3k and I'm looking for something interesting but that will still return ~35mpg and scare the tdi brigade.
So far all I can think of is a Clio 172 or a celica vvti. I quite fancy the Clio due to its performance and ability to not attract attention if desired. Whilst I like the celica because of the opposite as it does look a bit more interesting, however all the oil usage stories have me a bit worried. A thought about a puma but most in my budget seem to be suffering from rusty arches.
