Not a "what car" thread, but can anyone think of any "performance" diesels, that are less than ~£5k?

I'm thinking of cars like the MG ZT CDTi, Vauxhall Astra 888 CDTi etc...

BMW 330D, Leon Cupra 150 TDI, Golf GTD 150 TDI, Fabia VRS 130.

Astra/Vectra 1.9CDTI with a £200 remap. Alfa 156 1.9JTDm with same remap (same engine). Maybe 156 2.4JTD?

As above, but with a hybrid turbo, Water/meth and FMIC for 250bhp + and 450 lbft.

How much are VRS's now?

I'm not sure I would consider a MG ZT CDTI a 'performance' car, even for a diesel.

Leon TDI cupra? Golf GT TDI 130 or 150 model.... might even get the newer shaped ones of those for 5k.

BMW 330d or 530d as well.

I've a Golf GT TDI PD150, goes pretty well and returns high forties mpg, a decent allrounder.

I would have thought you could get a decent 330d for that, and then put the change towards blanking the swirl flaps and remapping it?

Skoda Octavia VRS TDI. Should get a high mileage 06 car for that.

Maybe a daft suggestion...but would you not be better off buying an economical performance petrol car? Lower fuel and maintenance costs and more choice? Just a thought.

Do they not? I thought all E46 diesels did?

In that case, I stand corrected. Every day is a school day here smile

Have any car makers actually made a performance diesel car yet? Closest I've seen is the 335d, but since it's auto only I'm not sure it can truly be called a performance car.

Ibiza Cupra TDi. 160bhp and quoted at 7.6 secs to 60 IIRC.

What about that M550xd that BMW released recently? Not even close to the OP's budget though!

I think the term "performance diesel" is used to describe a diesel with a decent bit of shove, rather than a conventional performance orientated engine, if that makes sense.

Depends on your definition of performance. If it is 'the fastest model in the range' then Skoda Fabia vRS Mk1 is it.

E39 530d , intercooler, decat & remap gives 280-290Bhp & over 450lbs of torque!

I would nominate the Mk1 Fabia VRS as a performance diesel, there was no petrol equivalent.

EDIT: about 3 seconds too slow posting, see above.

That's an awful lot of petrol tied up in those mods, not to mention the fact that you will be spending quite a bit of time and effort managing clutches and gearboxes. Just buy a better car in the first place?

Not yet - but I didn't want a bunch of uber new suggestons (i.e. I want cars I could realistically afford now or in a few years!)

It wasnt the performance I was thinking of, more of the "focus". I.E. the 888 has fancy brakes / suspension...

o.O I had no idea they went that high (with mods)
