Another What Car *sigh*
Discussion
Okay so the time has come for my mum to change her car from her Polo 9n to a newer vehicle. The criteria are: Hatchback/Liftback/Small saloon, smallish petrol engine, automatic, good on fuel and insurance as she does a lot of commuting, decent spec ie alloy wheels and air conditioning, 5 doorrs if hatchback.
Budget is 5k however will stretch to around 8k for the right car.
So far we've looked at everything from the VAG group 1.4 TSI DSG drivetrain in various guises eg a Jetta or Golf MK5, Honda Insight 1.3 EMA, Toyota Yaris 1.33 MMT, Honda Civic Hybrid IMA. We have also considered the VAG group 1.6 FSI engine however she reckons its too big an engine, as about 95% of her driving is urban, around town. Will the extra 0.2 litres make a difference? Also whats the reliabilty like on the VAG 1.4 TSI DSG, is the gearbox prone to failure? And is the 1.6 FSI reliable?
Also, has anyone got experience on the Honda Hybrids?
Not really PH cars as such but any info would be much appreciated

She's not keen on a micra, and i only just managed to convince her to at least consider a Yaris, as the road tax is £120 a year compared to £180 a year for a 1.4 litre Polo! Im more interested in the 1.6 FSI engines and especially the 1.4 TSI DSG as i may be able to sneak in a nice Golf GT

Had a look at these, which is the better engine, the 1.6 Vtec or the non-Vtec 1.4?88 bhp
Torque 95 lb-ft
0-60 15.0 seconds;
top speed 101mph
combined mpg: 44 mpg
VED Band G
1.6i VTEC S automatic:
108 bhp
Torque 111 lb-ft
0-60 11.9 seconds
top speed 109mph
combined mpg: 39 mpg
VED Band H
Neither engine is particularly powerful, but if it is bolted to an automatic I would got for the 1.6 every single time. 0-60 in 15 seconds is going to be pretty painful in the 1.4 and the auto will appreciate the extra torque of the 1.6 for town driving.
People who have owned cars with both engines claim that mpg is very very similar, though the 1.6 is a fair bit nippier.

I was going to say that. Current Fiesta 1.25 Zetec would fit the bill, fun to drive, very reliable and cheap to run.... or what about a Mazda 2? Polos are mega expensive for what you get, IMO and the better engined options particularly so. I Wouldnt touch a 1.4 TSI myself, too many horror stories going around about that engine....not sure about the 1.2TSI, surely if you must have a POLO, a straightforward 1.4 N/A is good enough simply for local trips?

fun to drive? It couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
My mate has one and he's down into second gear on some of the hills with 4 of us in the car.... not to mention he's "only" getting 36mpg
