Insurance - main driver vs registered owner?
Discussion
The wife and I have effectively swapped cars, with her using the Octavia estate as baby transport and me taking on her old Focus as my daily hack. Work fine for both of us.
However, now that I am the main user on the car registered in my wifes name and vice-versa, how do we stand with regard to insurance? (yes, I will ring the insurance co and ask, but thought I'd throw this to PH for views first). I don't really want to transfer ownership on both cars, thereby adding another owner to the history.

Advise them if you like... but I wouldn't bother on the off chance they say "No problem, sir, that'll be £50 (x2) admin charge to swap it."However, now that I am the main user on the car registered in my wifes name and vice-versa, how do we stand with regard to insurance? What's yours is hers and vice versa, so even though you own a car, you both own it.

Of course, but my concern is that I do high mileage as a named driver on her car. We are both covered for SD&P plus business use, so it should be ok I guess. Hopefully there will not be need to put it to the test!

Its fine, you can insure a car you don't own or are the keeper of. The V5 is the keeper anyway, and ownership is whoever bought it in the first place. Its pretty academic if you are married and live at the same address. There is no need to change the V5.However, now that I am the main user on the car registered in my wifes name and vice-versa, how do we stand with regard to insurance? Due to timing my mondeo has ended up being insured by my wife as the main driver (with me named) and her mx5 is insured by me (with her named). We use both cars equaly so no fronting issues, and at our age there is no cost difference anyway.
Just square it with your insurance co so that you are both insured on both cars (which you probably are anyway), and you are the main driver on the car you use.
