So sat in traffic today waiting to cross the toll bridge started thinking about how much money it must make.

Originally was thinking just for the 4 lanes of traffic on the motorway but then expanded to how much for the actual toll road all booths.

So i figure 12 booths during evening rush hr 3.30-6.30pm...

2 for trucks
2 for multi axle
8 for cars

6 vehicles per min per lane (very conservative figure i suspect more like 12 1 every 5 secs instead of ten)

Trucks = £44 per min
Multi axle = £24
Cars = £77

Total per minute = £140
Total per Hour = £8400
Total per evening rush her = £ 25 200

Thats for one side only.

So rough fag packet during evening rush hr dartford toll makes £50k per day

If we assume the same situation for morning thats £100k per day for 6 hrs.

Thats not including the periods in between and its also a very conservative number.

There are none. Debt was repaid in 2002 to the best of my knowledge.

Since then it has been pure profit (well ok less costs but it doesnt cost roughly 54 million quid a year and soon to rise to maintain a bridge). At a guess a million a week at this point.

On my way home tonight on the M25, the matrix sign near J5 had on it "Dartford Toll Charges Suspended". Anyone know why this was? Never seen that before...

Due to very heavy traffic and the fact its olympics and they dont want the bad public pr. Never fear the "we couldnt give a crap about motorists" nonsense will begin again once the olympics are over.

Wasn't it supposed to be free once it had paid for itself, but then some French company bought it and continued the tolls past the break-even point?

Give it to G4S - they'd soon stop the traffic!

(Think of the air pollution that would be saved.......)

I think you would be suprised to see the cost of Planned Preventative Maintenance for a big bridge and two tunnel bores. With 150,000 daily users, there is no doubting the turnover but I doubt there is much of a profit.

Yes but as we already fund that with all the other taxes we pay that's kind of irrelevant. The original agreement was tolls until the bridge was paid for. That was 2002.........

It's not like our road taxes are spent hand over fist on new roads is it??

The queues have been bad all week. Took me ages to get over and back around lunch time, no toll suspension then.

One of the many advantages of living in Scotland, under a devolved Scottish Assembly, is the fact they have removed all road/bridge tolls.

I dont enjoy paying, but i can understand it. What i dont understand is the need for tolls (over the bridge atleast) as the congestion charge seems to work quite well with just anpr cameras and thats more than 4 lanes.

Have you considered a quick google and reading the accounts to cross-check with your fagpack maths? Although I could only find 2009/10, submitted in 2011. I'm sure there's something more recent... http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/documents/S100293...

Here's what's happening during the Olympics... http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/4065.asp...

Just looked at that and dont buy it all unless we are misreading it and it is millions in which case it ties up with my thinking which would make a lot more sense.

£73 564 000 total income makes sense.

£73 564 total income does not. Thats less than 7k a month. Not a chance in hell. There are more than 7k cars going through the tolls a day.

Of course it's in "£’000", like it says smile
