I have got a decent quote on a 182 and have seen a few ok ones for around £2000.
Just got a couple of questions for people who own/owned one.
What are they like for everyday driving, Motorway and Town mainly
What sort of MPG can i expect with mixed driving.
I will probably be keeping it a while, What are servicing etc costs like?
And are they fun to drive, Dont want to be stuck with it for two years and hate the thing.
Any other alternatives?
Max £2000ish.
Type R, too much
Cooper S, Dont like the looks.

Only experience I have of a 182 is a test drive and it was a fun little motor, but I ended up buying a civic type R at the time.
I always recommend the Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC at this price range as they are very reliable, cheap to run and service, 30mpg. Not as quick or as agile as the 182 as its a little bit more heavy. still really nice to drive, comfortable and the engine is fantastic. Worth considering on a budget.

Absolutely fine for normal day-to-day driving. Turning circle of my Trophy was pants but I think they are worse than other 182s.
30mpg (I ran mine on V-Power).
Servicing costs: ok BUT there's a fairly expensive belt change every three years and a very expensive belt change ever five years.
ETA I really enjoyed mine - if you like revving engines hard you'll like it.

70k Miles = Cambelt (expect to pay £500+ at a specialist) Dephaser pulley at the same time...

Destroys civic type r's no matter what there owners say.
Do it, However at 2k, they would be ropey. I would suggest a 172 with all the tricks on it for 2k and it'll be a goodun as long as servicing and belts done correctly.

Yeah for around £2k=£2.5k I will probably looking at ones which need the belt doing. Il ave to have a look about and hopefully find one which has been done.
I dont mind the look of the preludes to be honest maybe an option.

Had a test drive for a day in a 182 was great car but coming from my Reno 5 turbo lacked the punch although each to there own some like n/a more , got a Ibiza tdi yes I no its diesel and may feel fast than it is but it's group. 5 insurance and mods declared its cheap running 150 Bhp and can keep up with my mates 182 to a point .
I have had mine for two years now and have enjoyed running it.
For a mix of motorways and town driving it is good. Don't expect high levels of refinement on the motorway though. I however, only really noticed this once i had bought my V70.
I get very good mpg out of mine. I usually average 36mpg from a tank. On an hour on the m25 the other day, it returned 41mpg.
On the servicing side it has been quite pricey. In the first year it seemed to have an awful lot of bits needing replacement. I bought mine with only 25000 miles on the clock as well!
Other than that it has been great fun. I have had itchy feet for the last year though and can't see myself being in it for more than three years. A certain 9000rpm redlining sportscar has taken my fancy!

I've just traded one in as part exchange on something new, though I've still got it until the new car is delivered in a week or two. I've had it since new and have hung onto it longer than any other car I've owned. It's been a great car, fun to drive and for the most part surprisingly reliable considering the reputation French cars seem to have. I've never been left stranded, but did have some running problems about a year ago which turned out to be coil packs. I've just kept it dealer serviced.
I looked at the Cup version but decided I wanted some of the toys that had been stripped out, so I got the 182 with the Cup pack option; essentially Cup suspension and the grey alloys. The Xenons on the full 182 are great for night time driving. The ride is quite firm but not uncomfortably so. Certainly no worse than the other hot hatches we've owned.
As regards fuel economy I seem to average about 30mpg but I think thats because I tend to keep the revs higher than I should. Renault recommends super unleaded so that's what I've used, but other owners don't seem to have any problem running on the normal stuff. On motorways it's fairly noisy cruising along in fifth (perhaps a sixth gear would have helped here), but I guess it depends what you're used to. You can still hold a conversation normally and hear the radio.
All in all, most fun car I've owned so far except perhaps a classic Mini Cooper.
ETA Seems I maybe part exed mine for under the going rate by the sound of it. Full dealer service history with receipts including the big belt service, under 75K miles and in good condition with 4 Michelins under 3K on them. £1600. Oh well, it's all to do with the cost to change I guess

I have a Trophy and love it to bits. Costs are pretty reasonable for the performance, I'm only about to be stung now because of the Sachs damper refurb cost. Insurance is also pricey for me. I can get 40mpg if I try but low 30s is more realistic.
The driving position is a tad awkward but you get used to it. In terms of the actual driving it is fantastic and in the twisties can snap at the heels of substantially more expensive metal!

Could manage 40 mpg if you have a boring steady trip to work and back.
I ran mine for a year and had no problems, and I didn't fuss over it at all. The exhaust was starting to go when I traded it in, a fairly common thing I believe.

From a friends experiance you'd be right, the 323s are pretty thirsty. Its good to see your looking at something like a Clio 182 instead of a dodgy modified Golf Not too keen on 146's and the VRS' are too much. Thanks anyway.

But, understeery!!!? That's one thing they're not. The one you drove must of had some really pants tyres on it or broken.
I test drove both a 172 and a 182 and came away a bit non plussed. I expected both cars to feel quicker than they did. Not helped that the test drives were on a dual carriageway, rather than a B Road, where these cars will shine.. Also, on the second test drive we had an idiot sales rep who took the car around a roundabout absolutely on the limit on three wheels and to me the car felt unbalanced and scruffy at that point, not as good, ironically as my wifes ageing 1.9 GTI Pug! A few years later I drove a Clio 197 and preferred it. Just shows that you have to try these things yourself, to see what you like and not just read the reviews, most of which give the 172/182 god like hot hatch status compared with the later 197! If it was me and I wanted a 182, I would spend 3 grand, not 2.
I've got an 05 182 Cup in Racing Blue. Love it it's a brilliant car if a little thirsty ! If I was buying again I would choose an FF 182 rather than the Cup model, or go find a Trophy if you can stretch to it. Don't expect more than 30MPG average but do choose good tyres and you won't go far wrong, like others have said make sure the cam belt and aux belts have been replaced but other than that they are pretty robust
