A little help please. When I press the clutch down, there is a bad noise. Unfortunately its rather difficult to describe, but its a kind of crunching/rubbing sound. It's only there when the clutch is half depressed eg: when fully down or up it is quiet.

Is this likely to be the slave cylinder (concentric type), the clutch or flywheel (dual mass) or something else? I don't have much experience with these parts, so a few inputs from more experienced members is appreciated!

Sorry to be so vague, and thanks for any help.

Clutch release bearing possibly

If it only happens when the clutch is depressed then it's probably a knackered release bearing rattling about.

Thanks. Thats what I guessed frown Sounds like a fun weekend ahead for me then!

On annother note, if I'm going to have it all apart, is it worth replacing the DMF? I've heard they're prone to going, but are over £300!

The cheap option is ignore the noise while stationary, and learn clutchless gearchangessmile

My money is on the DMF anyway, in my (albeit quite limited!) experience, my knackered clutch release bearing was evident when the clutch pedal was coming back up, and sounded like someone blowing over a bottle.

My precious searches on DMF failure (Saab) found symptoms such as yours, in fact, there was a YouTube video around highlighting the noise, might be worth a search?

No point in the dmf. They are very variable. The one on my diesel audi did 380k miles just fine and was only replaced when an oil seal went and got oil on it cuasing it to burn and pit the surface of the clutch.
