Can anyone suggest any?
Im toying with new family cars with economy being a criteria.
Ive noticed that there seems to be some nice cars available that can get 45mpg+
Examples being XC60, Evoque, C class 250d.
Any others that are worth considering?
Why worry about an extra 10-15 mpg when it will pale in to insignificance next the depreciation?, unless you do galactic mileages.Im toying with new family cars with economy being a criteria.

Having said that anything with a 2 litre diesel from BMW or Audi. Ford Kuga maybe.

Thats true enough. Im just a bit sick of the -price of petrol and its getting to the stage that it is actually a noticable amount. A cheap week in France has just cost me over £500 in petrol which just gets on my nerves, so when there are options of nice cars that will return decent mileage then why not?Having said that anything with a 2 litre diesel from BMW or Audi. Depends how new you are looking for. If you look at the newer BMW's the new ed engines are far and away better than the other middle grade cars, from what I've seen. the BMW 2.0D will give you excellent returns with also around 177bhp. Cheap tax too. Check it out though, that's off the top of my head. Audi playing catch up in that respect. If you have to have a bigger engine the 330/530 variants are a good option.
Unsure about the Toyota/Lexus engines WRT economy.

Pretty much any car <3.0 in the last few years. Or any diesel ever. Take your pick.
A good guide, but my parents diesel Volkswagen does 19 MPG when I borrow it so the last bit may be optimistic. Unless I'm in bragging Internet dweeb mode in which case it does 30 on a run and 35 at 70mph.I both understand the pleasure of a nice new car with good economy, and at the same time think it's absurd to buy brand new under the guise of saving money. Mixed.
Lots of diesels will turn in 45mpg.
Lots of diesels will offer decent performance.
Many of them will promise to do both - but most of them won't, not if you want both at the same time.
Try as I might, I just can't get a modern diesel engine to turn in anywhere near the promised figures - my last Passat was a 2.0TDI-170 and would turn in 42-45mpg over an average tank.
My current Passat is a 2.0 turbo petrol and turns in 38-40mpg - so whilst it's quicker, the real cost of fuel is pretty much the same.
However, I've recently been looking at diesels again purely because diesel is so much cheaper than petrol on the continent - so the savings on a 2k mile driving holiday can be very significant.

You have no idea on mpg. When I drive a modern 130bhp diesel I manage 30mpg my wife who drives like a priest manages 42.
Many 4x4 struggle to hit 25.
Any interesting petrol struggles to get over 25mpg driven enthusiatically.
Sure they could do more sat at 50 on a run but that isn't driving.

My diesel does 40+ at around 80, sometimes more. Depends when where who how etc. I would say a diesrl around 20-40 percent better than what you get out of a petrol equivalent When I drive a modern 130bhp diesel I manage 30mpg my wife who drives like a priest manages 42.

45mpg and a reasonable car isn't that unrealistic, IMO of course.
I drive a modern 130bhp diesel, quite likely a variation on the one that redgriff drives. Mine's in a Seat Ibiza, and my average (calculated, not on the OBC) over the 4000 miles I've had the car is 44mpg. The lowest I've had over a tank is high 30's, and that was down to lots of long journeys.
I currently have a 13 mile each way commute, cross country, and do M4-M23 on the M25 twice a week. Car is sitting at 44mpg, and I don't try to be economical.
I do wonder if a lot of the diesel haters try to make the economy worse, because they can't accept that for some people and some usage patterns, diesel really is better than petrol?

You either drove almost 3000 miles or you drove at 100mph. Which is it? Because expecting either to be cheap regardless of car is a bit nieve!
Nieve? 2000 @ 80 fully laden with roofbox. Trip counter reckoned 31 mpg which is about my cars expected combined figure. So not that naive, just logical
