Basically i own and insure a old 1.2L Fiat Punto mainly because im paying 1,000 to insure it which for a 20year old is reasonable. So i have just been looking at other cars and seen a old Audi A3 1.8L with only 50k miles very good condition so i went on compare the market etc and it was quoting me £1,800 with my current insurer. I then rang my insurance company and to insure it, it would only increase by £40. I cant believe it. I dont know whether to be peeved that im paying so much on a car with a low insurance group or to be happy that a high insurance group car is only £40 more. This maybe a way to get insurance down buying a nail then upgrading through policy? just a thought.

That's all very well and good- until renewal time, when it'll be £1,600.

Surely they wont do that ? although we are talking about insurance companies here. Which makes me worried...

Then he just says bye bye to that company and finds a better deal elsewhere - or just lie to them that so and so has offered a good deal, and they will match it.

OP, this happened to me recently. Got my first car, 1.4 fiesta, insurance was £1600. Had it two months. Fancy myself a 2.0L MR2. Rang for a quote and it would not cost me anything. Now on the looking for a nice MR2 NA. Anyone got one and want to swap for a Fiesta? :P

Probably - My first focus was £700 to start with then I swap it for another (same spec, just newer) premium was the same.
At renewal time I was quoted £1,200

Got it from Admiral for £600.

If you buy the car and then call to change the policy they'll ask for hundreds of pounds and deny all knowledge of the previous price. Even if you've got the name of the person and the exact time (important so they can listen to the tape) they'll still refuse to honour the price.

I disagree- I think the 'trick' here is that the OP has insured a cheaper car and then changed the policy to cover a different car. Somehow he has 'got away with it'- i.e. the insurer has not re-assessed the risk and has just added an arbitrary £40 admin fee. Neither the OP's insurance company, nor any other insurance company, would offer a price antwhere near £1040 if the quote was for new business.

Basically I'm calling it a fluke.

I dont know im going to disagree, they gave me the quote reference and everything so im sure they would honour it, besides ive been with Admiral 2 years. I also dont know if its a fluke but im very intrested into see what would happen if i called regarding another car.

Is that £40 on top of what you pay per month?
Or is it £40 payment as you paid in full?

Also- how long do you have left on your policy and does the £40 inc admin charges?

I went from a 75sx 1.2 Punto to an Audi 8L S3 about 4 years ago and it wasn't that expensive to change over as I had under 3 months of the policy left. I didn't renew with them though and got a better deal elsewhere

In my case it was an admin charge only and I have 10 months left on the policy.

To be fair, Admiral are a bit random. One of my daughter's was with them and changed from SD&P to business class 1 mid way through the policy and they refunded her £15.

I always found the renewal a faff though - it was always way above what the comparison sites came out at (also with Adniral) but then you'd ring up and they'd match it. Until one year they just said 'no', so she moved to another company.

If you ask your insurance company they should be able to tell you the equivalent yearly price too. Given that your insurance is currently £1000 and it's £40 for 9/10 months then the quote may be around £1100.

I reckon it is to do with your age as I found that my insurance dropped substantially between 19-24 especially as my NCD increased.

Yes i have 9 months left on my policy and the increase for a Audi A3 1.8L is £40 (that could be the admin charge). I would ask the question with regards to the renewal as i wouldn't find it funny being fleeced at the end.

How long is left on your current policy? If only a couple of months then it makes sense and they will nail you on renewal if 10 months then I'd say you've done well.

Arse... Left my browser open and went for lunch before replying only to see that you just answered this...

There is still a fair chance it will go up on renewal, mine did every year from the age of 17 up to 23, but now it's coming down again.

I had more of a surprise from my insurance.

I was driving a C2 VTR (110BHP I think) and was 22 with 1 years driving no claims, it cost me about £900.

I had that for just under 2 years and the 2nd year cost about the same.

Then i swapped to my current car, FR Ibiza (150BHP and basically brand new) and they told me that I would get a refund of a few £ if I swapped over?! biggrin
When i eventually swapped I got even more of a refund than they previously said.

Then comes the end of that term and there renewal quote for me is about £670, Just out of interest I did a new quote with the same company as a new customer and the cheapest it came back as was about £1300!

Admin charge is £17.50
Anything after that is risk premium for remaining time on cover, it may go up or down at renewal if you have 9 months left on your policy it's far too early to know what the price is.
There's too many factors that could affect your renewal premium for the insurer to specifically say it is the new car that increases the premium but it is likely you may see an increase.
