The good lady's Ka is due its MOT and is a rustbucket. The rust round the petrol cap is as bad as Ive seen on any Ka and Im debating whether is even worth testing. Failure on anything else I can fix but its not worth doing the bodywork. What will the MOT testers view be? Any thoughts?

If it isn't within a certain radius of suspension or safety equipment mounting points, and it doesn't present a hazard to pedestrians, the MOT tester won't give a darn how rusty your rear quarter panel is.

I'm confused as to why you think it'd be a MOT failure. Unless you plug your seatbelt in to the fuel cap?

As I understand it, rust is only an MoT failure if it's within a certain distance of a structural member such as sill or a seat belt mounting point (or if it has exposed sharp edges).

Rust around the filer cap is the least of your worries on a KA. Have a look for rot on the sills and floor pan if you're looking for a failure, followed by an intensive welding marathon. Or scrap it, they're death traps at the best of times!

Oddly enough the floor pans not bad and I did the sills last year but I will have a good prod under it at the weekend. The rust everywhere else though! Its a shame as its been an ok car and its hardly done any mileage (70 k / 2001) Be good to get a final year out of it while we decide on a replacement.

It’s a reasonable question, there is the possibility of a structural related failure...

My girlfriends passed no problem with a rusty hole round the petrol cap. Tester said its miles away from anything that matters, just as long as theres no sharp bits. Just stick some duct tape over it
