NCB shelf life

I have 2 cars with 2 separate insurance policies and NCB.

If I sell 1 car, can the NCB be saved to use again or is it lost if not transferred straight away?

As far as I know NCB can be left "on shelf" for up to two years?

No regulations AIUI, it's down to the individual insurer.

Aye, and some insurers will allow longer if they issued the NCB.

Just insured a bike with Carol Nash and they honoured my previous policy NCB which had ended 20 months ago.

Usually 12 months. Some will let it go for up to 2 years. Need to phone and talk to them to be sure.

A friend of mine has kept a second NCB on the shelf for years. Currently having only one car, he swaps the insurance around every year.

Always hear its 2 years.

I lived in the USA for just over a year and was able to transfer the NCB I had earned prior to the move upon my return(with Admiral just for reference).
