These never really get talked about, it's a really nice looking car though. Were they any good as a road car? obviously it seems to have been a successful racer with the procar series but I've never really heard much fuss about it.
Guessing it was weakened by low production numbers and competition from the likes of the 308 GTB/512BB, countach etc (if they are even comparable)

sounded nice too (donington 2011)

It had some success in Procar because that was a one make series. I think the original group that the car was designed for was abandoned by the FIA, leaving the M1 homeless.
I've always loved these, I saw a gorgeous, bright red one at a petrol station in Bracknell a while ago and risked walking into objects just to ogle it because... well... how often am I going to get to see an M1 in the wild?
From all accounts it really sounds like it was the Honda NSX of the late '70s, the usable, friendly, reliable everyday junior supercar of its time. They're supposed to be very easy and rewarding to drive but in its day it was slated a bit for lacking drama compared to its rivals, if I remember correctly.
I don't care. They look awesome. They could be rubbish to drive and they'd still look awesome, but no, they made it a great drive too. One of BMW's finest ever.

Yeah I know Procar was one make, I meant success in that it must have been a good enough car to be selected for a one-make series supporting F1 (like the porsche supercup today). The styling really seems to be quite ahead of its time, indeed the Procar versions could easily be a product of the late 80s.
This being PH I'm half expecting someone to turn up and say "yeah I had one in 198_ , great car but the _ had a tendency to break, in the end I p/xed it for a Ferrari _"

Yes the M1 was designed to compete with the 959 and 308GTO, once BMW bosses realised they had no chance (the car wasn't as good as the competitors) it came up with the one make series - thus eliminating the competition. More info here: http://nitroaddiction.co.uk/marlboro-liveried-cars...Also agree that is doesn't really matter, I'd still love to own one!

I'm thinking about getting one after my Z4M, it'll be a better all round car for my needs, not sure about the orange a lot of them seem to be in though!

I dont think you are talking about the same car

Does this help?
