I have heard rumour of a transatlantic car ferry going in/out of Rotterdam/Hamburg.

Does anyone know any more? had experience of using one?

Would love one day to take the Lotus over to the US and Canadia for an extended driving trip and would prefer to travel with the car - even if it means getting to Rotterdam first - rather than shipping it.

You used to be able to freight your automobile on the QE2. Maybe Cunard still offer a service on the jinx ship they currently use on the route?

Closest I've heard was someone managing to buy some space on a roll-on-roll-off ship which was delivering new cars to the US from Southampton - they managed to get a boat (on a trailer) shipped across to Miami by using one of the cars which had a tow-bar to load / unload it.

Other than that, RO-RO ships or containers are about as close as you'll get to a ferry, at least as far as I'm aware.

Someone on seloc shiped their elise to the states for a road trip. Was a few years ago though.

My brother shipped a car from the US to southhampton, and it cost around £600 iirc.

Getting it there isn't a problem.

Using it when you are there is the issue.

There are ro-ro ships which cross the Atlantic, they're just not public ones with Costa Coffee.

A freight forwarder who deals with cars should be able to sort it and the paperwork but you can't go with the car. You can temporarily import a car into the US if it is your own car without modifying it.
