Just wondering if there's anything out there with surprisingly cheap insurace given the performance on offer or if theres anything relatively modern (986 Boxster? E38 7?) that could be had on classic insurance?

Corsa apparently worth anything between 4-5k according to Parkers so could have 10k to play with.

Failing this I'll probably settle for an R26 Megane and have done with it because I've wanted one since they came out.

I'm 22, 2 years NCB (possibly three by the time I really get serious about a new car), been driving round in a 1.2 Corsa D for the past three and a half years hence the need for something either quick, interesting or both.

I have no desire to own a classic car in the slightest.

1. Why?
2. There is quite a difference from being modern to a classic. Probably 20 years worth of motors.

I just don't understand the "Oooh shiny" want with a new car. With a little bit older car you'll likely buy far more performance, potential and stronger residuals and potentially lower insurance.

I don't want a 'new' car, just something relatively modern.

There's nothing classic that appeals to me at all unless I suddenly became an multi-millionaire and could then afford a Miura/Countach/275 GTB/330 GTC/etc.

My BMW 335i coupe was £820 @ 21 with 1 year no clams and a few points....

You may get one within your budget although its a litle more for a decent one

What features of a car do you want that mean it's modern? You mentioned the E38, that's getting on for 18 year old design now and the Boxster is 16 years old. For many, they're classic cars (well, the 7 series is just an old car in my book biggrin), for others it has all the "toys" and build of a "modern" car.

Yoof... rolleyes

Ok, so how new or old is "modern"?

£10k could buy you some serious motorcar, or it could buy you an expensive hatch. But it's upto you wink

That would be perfect, the exact sort of thing I'd be looking for. Something completely out of the blue that you wouldn't expect to get such a cheap quote on. Ever since 996's have been popping up in the M/Barge/etc thread for 10k I thought about them. 10k is just a guestimate, dependant on how much I really want to save up over the next few months. Insurance will be the kicker though.

Suggest some serious motorcars, all I wanted when I made the thread smile

Well that's the thing, I specified modern because I didn't want people suggesting TR7's or Stags or even Mini's (I have no idea if you could get a TR7 or something for 10k anyway). Basically 90's onwards would do me just fine hence I was thinking of whether you could get a Boxster or E38 on classic insurance. I love both of them (especially the E38). Having said that I've just read on here that you can't get a classic policy until you're 25 now so that's kinda screwed things up.

Many classic policies require you to have a 2nd car also and are likely limited mileage. That said classic cars as a rule can often be a lot cheaper to insure on "normal" policies.

There are also a lot of specialist insurers about who deal with either classics, kits, niche, imports or modified vehicles. With certain vehicle types you are far more likely to get better quotes with these than on comparison sites. But chances are you'll have to have a phone around. Joining an owners club can sometimes gain you additional discounts too.

For example.. back in the day (circa 2000) when I was 20. Instead of running a "modern" hatch like many of my mates did (Nova's and Escorts being the favoured). I chose to run some older classics. Indeed a 295hp 5.3 litre V12 Jag and a 3.5 litre V8 Triumph TR7. The Jag was fully comp with guaranteed value for £750 and the TR7 I got with no NCB at 21 for £350 fully comp. Friends at the time were paying £700-1100 for a 1.4 Nova by comparison.

I guess as someone else said, what modern parts of a car are you after? Is it actual age or the registration plate? Is it styling, is it convenience items like remote central locking and air con?

For example, if I was your age I'd much rather drive something like this:

GTM Libra 1800 VVC (2000)
26,500 miles £5,750
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4013972.htm

Than a newer £10k Megane.

Kit car insurance can be silly cheap too, so well worth a shop around with some specialist insurers too.
