Commute home this afternoon, ok its a friday but at 5 different sets of major traffic lights with 2/3 lanes of traffic, when my lights were on green, not just amber, there were loads of cars still piling through from the right or in front, had to stop brake and wait for them, I'm seeing this more and more. Really annoys me as its dangerous and slows down the traffic who have the right of way.

On another note, several times in the past few months I have been waiting at a red set of lights (usually later on and quieter) for 30sec + with other cars, and then suddenly one of the front cars just seems to think, sod this and just drives off? in the words of Peter Kay, 'what's all that about!'

Is it down to unrealistic traffic light timing or just people being arses?

I've definitely seen an increase over the last couple of years.

Yep, see it all the time.

The roads are more congested, journey times are longer, people are impatient, cars are now a bubble of safety devices, people are getting more aggressive in their cars and there are less traffic cops around to actually catch people.

I think it's happening a lot more than it used to, though last time I brought it up on here I got flamed for some reason. I see it several times a week now, when it used to be a real unusual occurrence.

Some people seem to think that Green = carry on as normal, Amber = Accelerate, Red = You can still make it if you're quick.

Definitely. I've felt I've been a little cheeky slipping through on amber, only to see three cars follow me through! eek

Definitely getting worse.

It's now 50-50 as to whether a van is going to stop at a Pelican Crossing. You have to have your wits about you when walking across the road, even if the lights are red.
I've had several close shaves where i've foolishly thought "Green man for me, it's my turn on the road".

Definitely seen an increase since I started driving, which isn't that long ago! (6 years)

Remarked on another thread on the same subject recently that I've had a couple of close shaves on roundabouts where if I'd kept on the gas I might have had a collision. One was a car towing a boat that came sailing through as I set off on green.

See what I did there?

I've seen an increase too, sometimes where the lights for me to go have been on green for several seconds and I'm on my way across a large cross roads only for a car to come driving across. So the red must have been on at least for 30 seconds before they went through on their side?

I've had more than one occasion where I've slowed to a stop at a set of lights as they change to amber and to red (knowing full well that I wouldn't get through them) only to have the car behind lock up under braking to avoid hitting me because they thought I was just going to go through and they could follow.

Then they have the tenacity to toot their horn at me!

(Note: I don't suddenly stop the car, I mean a gradual slow down, meaning there was plenty of time to stop at the amber signal)

I think the problem in many cases is that lights in the UK are generally set on pretty short cycles. It's as if it's done on purpose to disrupt the traffic, instead of leaving them on green to clear the road. Doubling the green time would probably quadruple the amount of traffic that could get through as it would be crossing the junction a faster speed (which is possibly what the planners are trying to avoid).

I always notice when driving in Florida that the cycles are way longer - once you see a green light you can be pretty certain you'll get through.

I live in Southampton during the week at the moment. Southampton is used as a test bed for any new traffic light technology ( lord only knows why). The upshot is that there are about a million sets of lights per square meter round here. People seem to routinely jump the reds when there is no camera. It's insane sometimes. I've lost count of all the near misses I've seen in the past year.

This seems to be worse on roundabouts, as does starting before the green.

In addition to all of this, how many people have seen those creeping forwards after the lights have been on red for a while? It's like they're trying to use the power of their will to make them change!

Why do they put traffic lights on roundabouts it's against all good traffic management theory and bad for the green people.
