Hmm... Well it's that time of year again, and it's policy renewal time. My renewal with a-plan has come through at £1215, further discussion has got that down to £999, but the comparison sites are churning out prices at the £600 mark.

Here's the rub, I want a decent insurance company, and I'm happy to pay a slight premium for this - but £400 is too much!

So can anyone recommend anywhere that can quote competitively on a 2004 BMW X5 for a 32yr old driver with 6yrs NCB?

For the record, a-plan have been brilliant, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone, and I've tried flux, but they are quoting £1000+

So do I have to suck up a £400 increase for a quality insurer, or bite the bullet and 'go compare'?

Over to you, the Friday evening experts on PH!

If you have mods, avoid any insurer part of the Admiral group.

Cheers, no mods, but that's who's coming up cheapest...

why do you say that? they were extremely reasonable for my previous, highly modified car

Admiral, pretty happy with them, Run a Money Supermarket comparison and see who comes up cheapest. Like you, we could have got it slightly cheaper than Admiral (about £50) but decided to pay that bit extra as they have been good to deal with, my loyalty does not stretch to £400 tho!!

Yeah, that's the problem! £400 is a bit too much for loyalty, maybe I'll just take the admiral quote then at £598, just seems a shame that no one can recommend a good insurer that's not a faceless internet corp!

Admiral are cheap because they subsidise their quotes by using claims management companies to inflate prices. In 2010, hallf their profits came from "anciallary" sales - referral fees to lawyers in other words.

For further discounts inquire with them about a multi-car policy, I say this as your profile has two cars...I saved an extra £200 on my on-line quotation just from adding it to my Family's multi-car policy. They can setup adding cars in the future months which attracts discounts. Policy owner isn't even blood(Step mum) and lives at a different address, 100 miles away. All completely legit biggrin
