Hi All,

I need some genuine honest pointers please. I drive an 09 plate CLK and unfortunately every time my missus travels more than 3 miles she gets excruciating pain in her lower back.

As it is a company car I am not due a change for approx another 24 months so my thoughts were to buy a second hand comfortable second car. My budget is 5-6k. It will be used primarily for hacking about down to Tesco with perhaps 2 long distance drives per annum (Ireland).

My main requirementsis comfort so i am aiming at something with a large wheel base without a sports susoension. The follwowing are on mynshortlist. Please feelmfree to add to or comment on those below.

Volvos and Saabs reputedly have very comfy seats. Try out a Volvo S60/S80 in addition to the XC90, as well as a Saab 95.

Or you could go for an older barge, like a w220 S Class or previous gen Jaguar XJ (on small alloys).

Left-field option; Citoren C6. The ride quality is supposedly incredible.

Thanks Guys. Is here any advantage of a 4x4 over a large saloon ?

I would second the Volvo seats, how about an xc70?

Softly sprung 4x4 but looks like an estate?

Why not just get a cushion to make the seat in your current car more comfortable for her?

You could get a team of physiotherapists and ergonomisists to construct one from caviar and covered in panda skin for less than the price of an entire new car.

I knew a physio who had a stack of little cushions taped together on the driver seat of her Punto.

Saab 95 (or 9000)
Most Volvos
Most things with Recaros.
Citroen C6

Look for things running on 15" / 16" for a more compliant ride. Avoid runflats.

How about a Mercededs E Class?

If you avoid the Sport/Avantgarde you get softer suspension. And as other other poster have pointed out you want 16 inch wheels. Wafty.

Lol already tried it my good friend, sadly with no obvious benefit.

Would it not be best to take your wife for a passenger test drive in all of the above and see which is the most comfy? No point buying something else that may end up no better for her.

Fair point but she may have a good day and a week later she's in agony again hence why I'm trying to guage the best before purchase. At the end of the day any of these cars is going to be a risk.

If economy isnt a huge problem then a E38 in SE form with balloon tyres would take a lot of beating, even if economy is an issue then the 728 shouldnt be too bad.

Dont get a Landcruiser, a pain to get in and out of and in my oppinion nowhere near as comfy as they look.

Most comfortable car I've ever been in was an old, battered 200,000 mile pug 406, seats were very soft and squidgy...

This is a good point - I remember when I had a bad back, high vehicles were a pain.
