Humming sound from clio engine
Discussion
Hi all,
I posted the below issue in the french cars section of the forum because I have an issue with my 1.2 clio (Don't judge me!
) but that part of the forum is a bit on the quiet side so any help would be very much appreciated.
'Hi All,
I've got a 2008 1.2 clio TCE which i've had from virtually new for all of four years now (it was my first car). Lately i've notice a weird humming/ wheezy type sound which is more audible than the actual engine sound (the engine has always been pretty quiet), I don't know how to describe it really I just don't know enough about these things so any advice as to what it could be would be very much appreciated. I'm just hoping its not a problem with the turbo they look expensive :/
For info;
As much as I like cars I just don't know enough about engines so please be gentle with me
, Following on from the above I've had a look and the sound appears to be coming from the area in the center of the below photo if thats of use
Pic of area (sorry that the bit I was trying to take a pic of is out of focus)

For info;
- I can hear it when stationary and moving.
- Definately sounds like its coming from the engine area
- Gets louder with rev's rather than speed
- For the split second that I put the clutch in to change gear it goes (possibly because i'm taking my foot off the accelerator?)
- I've checked all oil levels etc and all is fine
- There doesn't seem to be any change in power or lack of, when driving.
- I can change gears smoothly with no issue
- The car passed the MOT a month or so ago with no issues
As much as I like cars I just don't know enough about engines so please be gentle with me

Hi all,
So if you sat with the engine at idle and your foot on the clutch it is quiet? But if you leave it in neutral and sit at idle with the clutch disengaged the noise returns?- For the split second that I put the clutch in to change gear it goes (possibly because i'm taking my foot off the accelerator?)
This would suggest a release bearing or similar clutch related issue.

Hi thanks for your response, I've just gone out and tested and whilst idle if I engage the clutch the noise is still there.jbi said:
clio you say?
sounds normal to me
I know right, never again thats all I can say I've had no end of troubles with it and everything started just after the warranty expired! sounds normal to me

Electrical issues, broken air con/ resistor pack, boot catch which opened on its own, handbreak issues.... if this looks like it'll cost to much i might trade it in for something nicer

I know that some if the inhabitants aren't very far up the evolutionary ladder but why not try Cliosport.
Because I'll likely be upgrading to a 335D/ Golf R or something of that sort at some point soon but am weighing up the new car vs house deposit argument.... New car is currently winning

I meant ask the question on the Cliosport website.

I thought you had found the problem to this OP? That's the only reason I never replied in the orginal thread you started.
I've just literally got back from the garage now, just on the off chance that anyone's interested it turned out to be an issue with the tensioner pulley bearings which had damaged the auxiliary belt according to the garage, so they replaced both and it now runs like a dream
thanks for everyone's input in both threads
the cost was £130 which seems ok really considering I dumped it on them with only 3 hours left of the day :PGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
