Hi all,

Bought a car from dealer and less than a week later the engine completely seized. Dealer agreed to get it sorted for me with no argument at all so I got it transported back the same day at my own cost and dealer is getting it fixed. The biggest problem I have is that it has been a week and I'm told to expect it to be another 3 weeks. No courtesy car has been provided either.

The dealer has been great but the timescales seem a bit too long for me. I can't really afford to be carless - this week alone has been hell car sharing with the OH!

Is this reasonable or should I just ask for my money back and go buy something else quick?

I'd second that. Cash in hand and buy another one.

Dealer has to be given the option to fix the fault before you can demand your money back.

Been there and got the t-shirt.

I thought that was the case, but how long is a reasonable timeframe for them to do that though?

It all depends on a lot of different factors. I can't see this being a simple solution unfortunately. Best of luck.

What car is it, how much did you pay for it, what are they actually doing to rectify it?

There's is no definition to reasonable, however if they've said 3 weeks more and justify it, I think it'd likely stand up as reasonable. If it's a sub £1k car you might say that you are very pleased with their service and help, but just can't be without a car that long and you are either looking to a loaner car or your money back (politely) and see what happens.

If its a major mechanical problem he maybe awaiting parts, garage time etc etc.

I know a couple of mechanics who have had cars in for 3plus weeks whilst awaiting parts etc.

What car is it and have they given you an idea of the fault?

It will be replacement engine (and presumably turbo too) being fitted. It was only around £1.5k and as I said I'm very happy the garage have accepted responsibility without a problem.

I'll give them a call again and have a chat with them as I really can't be without a car for a month. I have to get to/from work and my OH needs to be able to get our son to multiple appointments at 6 different locations over the next month - and neither can be done via public transport unfortunately!

Thought this was a thread about the wife refusing to have sex anymore. I sometimes forget that this is a car site.

I would write to them asking for an equivalent loan car. Let them know you'll accept an immediate refund, but if they refuse both tell them you'll be hiring your own car until they return yours completely fixed, and that they will be paying for it (either willingly, or via the small claims court)

Well I should have gone with my gut instinct and just asked for a refund straight away.

Excuse after excuse has been made and the work hasn't even started yet!

I asked for a refund last week. I have concerns that I won't get the car back any time soon and that when I do I'll have an engine of unknown history - the car I bought had history, recent turbo, timing belt and water pump change. I'm guessing the replacement engine won't have any of these and in light of my asking for a refund would end up being a budget rush job.

They did agree to a refund however did not have the funds to do it apparently, they requested I wait until today. Guess what, I now need to wait until Wednesday...

I get the impression this is going to head to small claims.

Have you mentioned trading standards at all? That's what kicked started the refund process for me (although on a more expensive car).

get your money back, 'sale of goods act 1979' states that you are entitled to full refund as it is 'not fit for purpose'
