I'm after a 520d auto but the new shape one, at the moment they all seem to £20k approx but I'm hoping as more car will come to the end of three lease agreements they'll come down to my budget of £15k. £15k buys a very good old shape one but it's the new shape I'm really wanting, I'm thinking of keeping my current car going until I can find one in my price range, worth waiting or just take the plunge now with a decent old shape (Which I would not spend £15k on) Please no old M5’s or buy cheap run around and elise for the weekend.

I dont think the old is so much the issue as the M5, an E60 M5 is going to have running costs in a completely different world compared to a 520d, a thread a while back was filled with horror stories about full gearbox replacements etc.. the concensus there was to buy an e38 M5 instead unless you have a cool 10 grand to spare for when the e60 acts up.

Honestly, i prefer the E60 to the F10 (that is the new one right?) in terms of looks, so i'd find a decent E60 and keep the rest in the bank to keep it running nicely.

I'd rather the new F10 than the e60.

Yup, I reckon that in 18months you'll find £15k cars knocking around outside the BMW network.
They'll likely be the very early 520d SE models, in lease-spec grey with very few options and 100k+ miles on the clock.

Having seen a few of these new BMWs now, I am gobsmacked that people can't see beyond the badge as to just how incredibly big-nosed and ugly they are. They have really dropped the ball on their new models.

Hmmm, this is what I'm concerned about, not sure I'll want to spend £15k on any car with 100k on it, probably not worth the wait. Crystall ball stuff I know, but was hoping for £13k 100k stuff and £15k for sub 60k and cared of a little.

Well, you might be right. I'm not in the trade so this is just my educated guess work.

New model BMWs tend to hold a pretty good used residual % when they are new to market as demand tends to be high. Flip side of that is that when the new models start hitting the used market at 3yrs old, the last of the old model take a right thumping.

In the past I've actually been a bit of a fan of buying used cars at the end of their lifecycle. You tend to get great specs in the run-out year, they got the hand of building them so ironed out all the early niggles and the prices are surpressed by the new model sitting next to them on the forecourt. So mayby an e60 would be a good choice for you.
