Hey guys, my cousin is moving over here from Ireland to start a new job in Somerset, she has asked me to sort out buying a car for her. My Uncle wants to get her a 2-year old Polo or similar, so the budget is £8k. My cousin really wants a Golf, I should say my family are VW through and through and would rather only buy an approved used VW. I think there are many better alternatives out there and need to persuade them otherwise. She has been driving my Uncles VW Jetta TDI for the last few years so I think she wants some familiarity, her commute could be upto 40miles each way, so diesel is probably better, or a very economical petrol. Ideally she would love a new Scirocco or an Audi A3. But whatever it is I've got 3 weeks to find it. My uncle (he's paying) won't go for anything fast, or anything too flashy, or anything that won't do 50mpg.

So far I've looked at:
Mk5 Golf TDIs - bit too pricey, but what she wants
Seat Leon/Skoda Octavia - Like a Golf but dull
New shape MINI Cooper - looks great and petrols look very economical
BMW 118d/120d - bit too old but potentially a very good car and too flash for them

What else should I look at? It needs to be premium feeling, reliable and quite attractive. I was thinking about things like Kias and Hyundais with those 7 year warranties, can anyone recommend anything?

And no I don't have pics. hehe

Premium feeling and quite attractive = Kia

confused

As it's not you spending the money or driving the car why not just get what she wants? It's not like the Golf is a bad car at the end of the day.

What? Leon dull compared to the uber dull appliance on wheels that is a Golf? Seriously?

How about an MX5? biggrin

It's not fast; It's not too flashy; and hypermiling might get you somewhere near 50mpg. Can't hurt to test drive one biggrin

Just get her the golf, that is what she wants, and with the family being a bunch of VW-fans, convincing them something else is better will cost you a lot of effort, and can only really blow up in your face (oh, that megane you told us to buy is having issues, a golf would've been fine), and you have nothing to gain from it.

Just get her what she wants and leave it be

This looks like a nice little car. You really need to look into the insurance though.

Small things like ipod compatibility and flip down drivers mirror with illumination will be important to a young girl.

I don't think it's possible for a car to be more dull than a Golf. hehe

The Leon/Octavia are largely like the Golf but without quite such cuddly cabins and with a bit less sound insulation.

It's not a swap I'd previously considered, but we can talk.

Well I can't really find any Golfs within budget from approved used VW dealers. Only ones close have very high mileage for the age. I've just been at Toyota looking at the Auris, and sneaky look at the GT86 too biggrin
