Trying to join the busy A31 dual carriageway tonight in Dorset from a slip road, I found a gap between two lorries...moments later, a new shape Focus has squeezed into a non existent gap behind me, nearly rear ending me and making the artic lorry behind me lock up...i actually saw the whole rig shimmy behind me...lorry driver understandably raged gives the car driver a hoot and car driver then gives lorry driver various gestures out of his window...

If the road had been wet, i hate to think what would have happened.

Why do people...a) do it and b) then get all arsey when they are in the wrong?!!!

Probably not, but it's true.

Why was there such a small gap between your back bumper and the lorry's front bumper when you joined the carriageway?

Joining between 2 lorries and not enough room for the other car, so you'd already taken up their braking room then even before the Focus decided to join the party...

my driving instructor was some form of SAS advanced driver, he did all sort pursuit and evasion driver training

first thing he did was give me a copy of road craft

first thing he said was "assume everyone else on the road is a wker determined to cause an accident"

and the git used to rap me across the knuckles with a stubby ariel when i ignored instructions, "gas" "gas" tt "owwwww"

i did one lesson completely in reverse !! and another i was not allowed to use the clutch pedal even when starting the car ...

oh and one lesson i had to 3 point turn the car on a road 1 foot wider than the car was long and if i touched the kerb i had to start again, took me 2 bloody hours and 30 turns on the successful maneuver

come to think he was a nutter lol

It does seem all too common. People make an error then appear to think it is everyone else's fault. This is not limited to the road...

Most don't realise that slip way is still a give way junction. Instead they think that they have the right of way to just join and cause traffic to take evasive action as a consequence. Also, many don't realise how much more forward planning is involved when driving larger vehicles and don't realise or think, how much bigger their stopping distances are. Or that if it's a fully loaded artic that the trailer will try and push the cab out of the way and overtake it, if they brake too hard. I'm ranting now, so I'll stop.

AIUI when the Spastic Society changed its name to Scope to try and stop people using "Spastic" as an insult, people started using "Scoper" to the same effect. I'm not sure if that makes "Spastic" OK or not.

laugh

If not, I can think of plenty of other terms to describe the utter knobbery I see on our roads on a daily basis. Especially in and around Birmingham, for some reason.

I am pretty sure that individuals with cerebral palsy (they tend to prefer that to "spastic" although the general term person with a disability would indeed be more pc) aren't able to drive. Further more the ascetion that the majority of people are thus afflicted is incorrect. The condition only affects a very small minority.

unfortunately, this sort of thing happens everyday.
my mrs was with me the other day, we were taking the wagon back to the yard, luckily empty trailer on, so approx 18 tonnes gross weight, nice and light.
we were on a 3 lane stretch of the a12, i noticed ahead a lorry exiting a layby, so moved into the middle lane as i knew i would soon catch it. a clio was on the inside lane, doing approx 50m.p.h, and i assumed oblivious to the lorry leaving the layby. i said to my mrs, "notice how the outside behind us is clear at the mo." she agreed and asked, "why?"
very quickly the clio was on the bumper of the lorry and just braked hard, then as we were approx 50 feet from the rear of the clio, with no indication and at about 30 m.p.h it pulled straight into the middle lane, forcing us to literally stand on the brakes. i was slightly miffed and gave a friendly toot of the horn and flash of the lights, only to be flicked the v's from the rear passengers of the clio. my mrs was going nuts, jumping up and down and swearing, when she eventually calmed down, she said, "why didn't you go mad?" and i just explained its a daily event, you have to get used to it. she also asked why i'd commented on the outside lane being clear? i explained, that had we been loaded, at 40 tonne, thats where we'd have ended up, otherwise there would have been some seriously injured, or dead people in said clio.
she also said, " you knew the clio was going to do that. how?"
i told her, " i just did" sixth sense.
