Just having a conversation with my Dad about the various noises different cars make when turning over on the starter. It's always been a bit of a deal-breaker for me if it doesn't have an agreeable starting sound - I would assume I'm not alone here.

I tend not to like the ones that turnover quickly with a "hehehehehehehehe" sound, but the more chunky sound. THE best sounding starter motor in the world is of most mid 90's Vauxhalls. I can still tell that one a mile off. Also old school diesels are good - not so much the modern ones though.

Good topic, I was just thinking about this the otherday, I heard a jag starting and thought it sounded just like my BMW, must be a straight 6 thing, types of engine and cylinder count seem to influence the noise they make.

I find it odd that all VAG petrols are extremely difficult to differentiate from the diesels when starting up
