I don't know a lot about newer VAG tdi's (i know and like the older 1.9tdi powerplant) or the 2.0D V50.

Both 2005 cars
Both manual
Both same sort of £'s

Thoughts please!

Weve got a 2.0 tdi,a4 avant, and been very happy with it
you need to be aware of the DPF's though,

And they seem to seize the back wiper motor as well,

nut other than that, great, we had upto 58 mpg on a run

It would'nt be used for short runs so afaik DPF won't be a problem.

Need to know more about it though.

Experience with both, the A4's built quality is better, but there's not much in it and the cabin isn't as funky as the Volvos, but it serves its purpose well. The ride can be a little hard on the 18" 5-arm wheels you find on S-Line A4s. The diesel pulls nicely, not especially refined, 140 or 170ps flavors vs the Volvo DW10's 136ps. 140ps Audi shares the same torque figure as the Volvo, 170 obviously pips it. Audi gearboxes are nice.

We're on our second A6, it's done 96,000mi in the past 7 years we've had it (it's an 05), and it's been excellent, bar a fault which reoccured through dealer fault. It's literally just been booked in for the 28th to have its other key reprogrammed which stopped working after they replaced this ECU thing in the steering column. See my garage, for running costs etc. Genuinely just tyres and routine servicing.

I think cruise was still a £125 option on the A4 S-Line whereas it's standard on SE Volvos, the stereo is great as standard, BOSE was a popular item as well. Space in the back isn't great for people over 6ft, but I cannot for the life of me remember what the Volvo is like in the back.

Audi will have a 70 litre tank whilst the Volvo I think retains the 55 litre size as the Ford Focus and the Audi's loadspace will be bigger. Tax bands should be the same.

140 tdi doesn't have DPF just on 170s. 140 pulls better lower down and is a bit more refined. If you want full specs / pricelist from 2005 (or any year) inbox me, I have all Audi specs back to 2003 ish.

Thanks Charles.
IF i do go Audi it'll be a newer deep grill one.

I'm Not ruling out the IL4 2.0 petrol turbo A4s either tbh.
Need to do some research.

It'll be a shame to leave Volvo though, we'll see.

I had a v50 2.0d back in 2007 as a company car. the engine was a dog compared to the vag unit. Nice car otherwise but the octavia I replaced it with was a much better car all round apart from the stereo, so the audi should be better again

Personally I'd take the 2.0TFSI, we've borrowed both a 140ps 2.0TDI 6-spd and a 2.0TFSI Multi-tronic CVT thing. Petrol had a lovely punchy, linear delivery, just kept pulling when the diesel runs out. Can dip to worrying numbers on the consumption gauge, but can also surprise. Can sound pretty raspy too. No thoughts on the 6-cylinder diesels? 2.7 or 3.0 etc?

Tbh don't know anything about the six cylinder Audi diesels.
Did they put a sixpot diesel in the A4?
I'll do some rooting around on the forums, see what's what.

Btw Charles, thank you for the email.

Indeed, 180ps 2.7 and two 3.0s, a 200ps and a 230ps.

Have experienced the 2.7 in an A6 several times, smooth and torquey, I'd imagine the 3.0 is much the same, but more so.

Audi Avant 3.0 TDi S Line Quattro.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4155235.htm

Slightly earlier lower power model, but crucially pre DPF.

I think that's being a bit harsh on the Focus TBH...

Soon after picking up my V50 I came to the conclusion "The Ford is strong in this one" smile.

I have a 2005 S4 and my parents have a V50 2.0D.

The V50 is smaller than the Audi, but I do like the way the Volvo drives. The Volvo is a well built car, while people call it a focus in a dress, its like calling a TT a golf in a dress. Fine they were designed side by side, but it is a lot better than it.

I bought the Audi and would do it again (I was considering a V50 T5), but the V50 is not a bad car and would not object to owning one.

Stick with the manuals, multitronics can be bothersome with miles, save yourself the hassle. Generally they're solid old tanks.
