Cleaning a smelly interior?

Hi guys,

My friend left a milk bottle in their car for about two weeks and now it stinks. Does anyone know A) a good way to get rid of it (tried cleaning, leaving the windows and doors open, tried fabreeze, still there) or a good valet in london that will sort it out for a good price?

You need an enzyme cleaner to kill the bacteria causing the smell, or else it will just keep coming back.

Something like Autosmart Bio Brisk or ValetPro Enzyme Odour Eater.

Perhaps not what you want to hear but I had to replace the carpets before I eventually got rid of a spilt milk smell in a previous car.

If you know anyone with a Numatic George cleaner then it's easy. I treated my whole car to a good clean last weekend and now it just smells like lemons

Now is definitely the time of year to do it too, as the car was dried out in less than an hour. I used 1001 Machine Cleaner, bought for 99p and still have loads left.

Your also gonna need a wet-vac to draw out the mucky water, otherwise the smell will come back once the carpets dry.

I spilled a protein shake on the carpet in my van, I pressure washed the carpets and dried them with a wet and dry vacuum cleaner. Stunk for a day or two after. Stuck a neautradol odoour eliminator on the dash and it smelt fine after than, plus the carpets look like brand new.

I don't advise pressure washing the inside of a nice car though, it did send mucky water everywhere!

You can hire a carpet cleaner from B&Q or Homebase - if you can remove the carpet in the offending area and clean it out of the car, better.

Give it a couple of runs with the carpet cleaner (plenty of detergent) on the affected carpets and then go over the whole interior with Autoglym Interior shampoo. This should sort the smells out.

Milton Sterilising fluid, or similar, may be an effective enzyme killer. Once you have used a wet vac to clear up the spillage, soak a cloth in it and put it over the spilled milk, change it every 12 hours for another soaked cloth. Smell should be gone with 48 hours or so.

Buy or borrow a cheap wet vac.

Fill a bucket up with warm water and soap powder(ie the stuff used to wash clothes).

Sponge it onto all the affected surfaces then work in with a brush and leave for 10 mins.Put plenty on.

Suck the dirty liquid out with the wet vac.

Leave in the sun to dry the residual wetness.

Job done for very little outlay.

This is the way I used to valet cars,vans and lorries years ago and was always pleased with the results.
