It used to be that "rip off Britain" was horribly expensive to buy cars here, yet things have thankfully changed for the better. Surprised at the prices of old A8 barges on Mallorca got me thinking what cars are cheap here but expensive on the mainland, Im thinking of buying something and selling it in Spain.

Most people are surprised to find that Britain in general isn't extortionately expensive. In fact, we overall have a very high standard of living.

And this is a trick my uncle has been exploiting as long as I can remember. He lives in Italy. He flies here, buys a car, knocks around in it for a while and sells it on. He made good profit on a W8 Passat as I remember, a Mustang, a Jag XJ6 and many others, but those are the ones that stick in my head.

Look at the prices in Europe of the JDM imports we take for granted here.

Japanese cars imported here first allow many European buyers to sidestep a complicated and expensive importation process which generally precludes Japanese sports/performance cars being imported privately.

As such most carry a big premium.

On balance we're probably one of the most petrolhead friendly nations on the planet, in terms of what we can import, what we can register to use on the road(motorised sheds and sofas!) and the modifications that are allowed to be used on the road.

Used cars here in Blighty are incredibly cheap compared to our continental cousins. Probably due to excessive supply over demand due to the company/lease culture and that fact that finance is not a dirty word (PH excepted) means there isa constant churn of used cars hitting the market keeping prices down.

^^ Yeah that. Also, since most of Europe drive on the wrong side of the road, there is very little European demand for our cars.

The UK isn't expensive. Cheap food, energy, cars. Fuel is 'expensive' but we pay about the same here in Bulgaria. Property is expensive, for what you get, as ipare some of the taxes you pay. Norway talks the biscuit. Before a night on the town you have to visit the bank and arrange a loan.

Plus they don't worry about age or mileage there like we do. I think our dated plates have a lot to do with it - changing twice a year means cars seem to age twice as fast.

Of course the exchange rate now means anything priced in Euros looks very expensive.

depends where you are comparing it to

cars, houses and fuel are very expensive in the UK compared to CA, i could get a 5 bed detached house with double garage and pool in CA for what my 2 bed terrace cost me and in a better area

the GT86 (scion) is £17,500 incl sales tax
