Help - I've got to buy an ordinary car.
Discussion
I've got to buy a family car to replace my beloved Boxster because we need something more practical. New car will effectively replace my wife's Yaris too. In fact it will nominally be her car as I’m keeping hold of my mk1 Golf which will evolve into my new all-round competition and occasional commute car. Anyway, ordinary cars are not an area of expertise of mine. I’ve got lots of ideas but I’d like to see what the PH experts can come up with.
New car must have the following (these are non-negotiable as they have been stipulated by my wife)
Very reliable
4/5 seats
4/5 doors
No longer than 4400mm
Able to transport 4 people and luggage at speed comfortably
Manual
Cost less than £10k
Less than 4 years old
Less than 40k miles
At least 25mpg average.
Ideally it would also be quite fun to drive too but the Golf and my motorbike can cover that if required.
Thanks

Thanks for the replies. Passat and 3 series too long.
I should have been more specific earlier. I know enough about ordinary cars but not PH levels of detail. Ie I want someone to say "you need a Golf 1.4 TSI with the sport pack but avoid pre-2009 cars as they have dodgey wheel bearings" or similar.

Get to a car supermarket then wonder round the mid-sized car area with the missus. Great way to look at lots of cars in a short space of time. Just be sure to triple check any car you are thinking of buying. I've found a few dodgy 3-4yr old cars at car supermarkets-engine lights on, puddles in boot, trim trashed, engine bay that looked like it'd been washed up on a beach at some time etc!

The passat is good, I know it's boring but so is a mondeo, which is terrible inside. Try and move the arm rest and see what happens plus it will be worth less than equivalent vag car
If a 3 series is too long then these will certainly be.I'd recommend, as somebody else did, a Golf Gti mk5. Reasonably practial, a good steer and reasonably reliable.
I would have said 130i, which does fall down on the 4 year stipulation but the rear bench is useless for adults.
I had a CMAX which would do all that. The 2.0 TDCi isnt a bad motor, and from memory isnt the standard Ford one that's in the Mondeo. That might be a good point but I believe it's a PSA engine.
The rear seats are a bit firm though, and I always felt that for the width of the car, the front seats were a bit narrow
