Insurance Conundrum

looking up insurance, currently insured on a 2004 Audi A2 1.4 SE and a 2008 VW Polo 1.2

and have been looking into insurance for a 2007 Golf GTI Mk5

i'm 24 with 6 years no claims

comparing insurance quotes

Audi A2 comes back as £620

Polo comes back as £580

yet the Golf GTI comes back as £558

all my deatils are the same for each car, but I just cannot understand

how a Golf GTI with a larger engine and therefore faster is cheaper to insure with the same company.

Because insurance cost isn't soley based on a car's performance.

It's all part of a picture based on a number of statistics.

For example, for a profile similar to yours, there may be a load of people that have crashed A2s but few crashing Golf GTis. In another area, it could well be the other way round. Also, difference insurers calculate things slightly differently. All you can do it just get a load of quotes and take the best for you.

A few years back in the US, not long after Fast and Furious came out, it was three times as much to insure a FWD Prelude as a Z3M for me. Reason - accident statistics, lots of young folks wrapping Hondas around trees.

IIRC correctly A2's are all Ali and bloody expensive to fix.

I was thinking that too. Slightest thing would probably write it off.

Depending on where the OP lives, it's the 1.2 Polo that looks dear out of that lot. My daughter had a 1.2 Ibiza and was paying something like half that, though bizarely it did jump up (with Admiral) when she was 25 - they wouldn't budge and she switched companies.
