Inspired by the thread about Garlicks Lexus and general interest in aged examples.

Has anyone even broken one or heard of one breaking ?

I see loads of them with 150 to 300k,are they on their original engine, do they ever wear out ? seems to be that the car they are in dies before they do through neglect or simple economics.

Is this just a V8 thing, is for exmaple a Lexus V8 superior to an American one, or a German one ? Do they last due to the ownership profile and good servicing, is it unstressed due to the way they get driven ?

4.0L running 260/290bhp.

Super strong over engineered bottom end.

It's an unstressed, over built engine connected to a slush box.

No reason they should break.

They seem popular as converstion choices by those who swap engines about. Always a sign of good engineering and a rock solid reliability reputation.

Plus, this engine design is from an era where Lexus were new on the scene and desperate to show they could not only take on Mercedes, but beat them in every single area of design and execution. Everything was over engineered to make the point.

Internet rumours suggest that the stock bottom end on these motors is fine with being boosted to 800hp...

don't know about German ones but the small block and big blocks from Chevy, Ford and Mopar seem to go on and on (BTW the small block Chevy is apparently the worlds most popular engine bar none!)

Great engine, only issue I had on mine was it needed the valve clearances reset.

Tis' a big bd of a lump though for anyone thinking of a transplant.

Would be interesting to see what the relative quality is, my perception is that the Lexus engine would be superior but the reality may well be different.

I think that an understressed V8 tends to be designed to run on and on and on, but those Lexus engines are terrific.

An acquaintance of mine is a big car collector near Detroit. He's a big Mopar fan and has an incredible collection. The last time I spoke to him (3 or 4 years ago) he was still driving his 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland (4.7 High Output V8) with well over 300k on it and going strong, although certain ancillaries such as air con and other items such as heated seats had long packed up. To generalise, you don't hear many problems with longevity of any understressed V8s from most makers.
