First car with one, not what I was expecting. You wouldn't want it going off accidentally.

My thoughts exactly, that's what writes most modern cars off nowadays. The number of airbag components to replace costs more than the bodywork

doesn't the nissan GTR get written off at low speed impacts that deploy the bonnet raising system?

Apparently they will be making a spiked version for people who live in chavvy areas.

Does anyone know if recognises the differences between animals? I'd be a bit pissed off if hitting a dog or cat wrote my car off.

Personally, I think this is probably a very, very good thing.

I can think of absolutely nothing worse than being involved in a fatal accidnet, even if it wasn't my fault

Get real.

Car will throw up warnings....Fail an MOT....Invalidated insurance etc. etc. Won't happen.

How many will go off in car parks when you your wife inadvertently hits a post.

I think you're supposed to stop when you hit a pedestrian. biggrin

I guess they are counting on the fact you see the pedestrian at the last minute or at least st yourself and slam on the brakes when you can't see out of the windscreen.

Depends if said wife drives at 20kmh into a post or not. I imagine the system is tuned to detect legs (not sure how) so the only animals likely to set the system off are cows/ deer/ horses etc and not rabbits, cats and dogs.

My biggest concern is when all the error lights come on later in the life of the car and the subsequent cost to put right. All this adds to the weight of cars too (think of the environment smile ). What has happened about driver/ pedestrian training - this is surely where the attention needs to be rather than enveloping the car in cotton wool to ensure no harm comes to anything.

By 2050, I reckon Volvo will have developed a system to protect flies and bugs from hitting cars. Just bloody daft!
