I visited a petrol station yesturday that had signs on the pumps saying all fuel must be paid for first after 6:30pm.
Now i've never come across this before but i assume the idea is to prevent undesirables filling up and driving off without payment.

But then I had a thought whilst handing over £20 to the cashier before I filled up.
What exactly stops people from handing over £20 and putting in £30 and driving off?
What evidence would there be to prosecute with other than my word over yours ect?

It all seems abit silly to me and i can't understand the point of it?

the operator can cut the pump off at the paid price, you may get a few pence extra

I thought they were programmed to shut off at the amount paid. That's what happened to me in the States, anyway.

The best ones are where you want to pay by card and have no cash on you so they tell you to leave your card with them whilst you walk back outside and fill up. Yes, ofcourse I trust you with my credit card rolleyes

Anyway, the other option that they started to take around here was automatic stinger type grids that raise out of the floor.

Note the green traffic light and the metal grid at the entrance.

I keep an expired credit card in my wallet for this very purpose. The last time I did this the cashier went to swipe the card I had left. I said, 'no not that one, it's expired'. He asked why I had left an expired card, and I simply replied, 'you don't trust me, I don't trust you'.

What happens if you pay for £20's worth and your tank only takes £19.50's worth? Do they refund 50p to your card?

I filled up at a Tesco Express in Kent. I say filled up, the bloody thing was set to lock up at £50 so I got half a tank. Cheers Tesco.

I can understand why they do this, I work in a fuel site, and we can easily loose up to £300 a week in drive off.'s.

In particular white vans are the main offenders! (usually traveller types)

But i will also add, We don't get many in the evenings, usually when its really busy during rush hour, So not sure why they would only do this after 18:30.

As for jerry cans, its often a case of watching them fill, and be ready to chase the fkers down the road!!!

I got a bking from one of the harridans they had on the desk at Rainton Services on the A1 northbound for filling the lorry up first. When I asked them where the signs were stating this and why on earth did she switch on the pump this was met with unintelligible muttering.

I can understand why they do it and it has been commonplace at HGV pumps for years.

Put the nozzle back in the pump, then remove and fill up again with another £50confused

Many pumps cut off at £100 so when filling a HGV up ,just do the above, the cashier knows you

have used the pump twice and will charge the combined amountsmile

Where I have filled up a couple of times over the last couple of months (out in the countryside) a bloke comes out of his shop, fills up your vehicle for you and then you hand over some cash. Sorted, and we even exchanged a few words which was very pleasant (not that I was after a social occasion).

You lot must live in some nice areas, this practice was common in the more undesirable areas of large cities 30 plus years ago.

I hate having to pay 1st, needless timewasting but can understand the policy, fortunately if you use local garages then they will recognise your car so usually you can avoid the inconvenience
