My girlfriend is about to buy a 55 plate Freelander diesel Freestyle 2.0. It only has 21k on the clock.
Are these crap ? I seem to remember something about oil leaks being common and some sort of problem with them (could have been the Discovery though ?)
Any experiences with them ? She'll probably do bugger all mileage in it, a couple of miles to the shop and back. I would suggest not to buy a diesel for thus purpose.
She probably won't listen to anything I'll say but I might as well try.

They're as good as any other Land-Rover product fitted with a Peugeot engine. Take that as you want...

Except it's a BMW engine, so that must now make it wonderful...

Oh heck, yeah. Didn't notice the 55-plate bit. My apologies.

I wouldn't touch a Freelander 1 with yours. Get to know your AA recovery man, you'll be seeing him a lot.

Possible, but plenty people I know have ran them for years with minimal maintenance. Electrics can be a bit temperamental but they are getting on a bit now.

Would the petrol one be better for smaller journeys ?

1.8 petrol model can be a complete pain in the arse due to recurring head gasket problems. You MUST keep a close eye on coolant levels as the reservoir is not big and loosing a little can have potentially serious problems.

TD4 diesel unit is a much better bet and IMO is better suited to the car esp if you blank off the EGR valve. No DPF to worry about so can be used on short journeys but usual things like injectors, turbos, etc - as in ANY diesel. LR TD4 is no less reliable than any other diesel.

Electrics can play up a bit so check everything works.

Check seals esp around the back door as they can leak.

There are plenty of high milers about so they can take the milage and plenty of specialists around to keep costs down.

Diesel Particulate Filter.

Work of the devil and unless you do 50billion miles a year it will clog up and cause serious damage to your wallet. New regs mean that all new diesels have them in order to reduce the amount of crap coming out of the exhaust thus saving all the penguins from certain death.

ARGHHH!!! If I see one more post on the internet where someone has misspelt 'lose' and put 'loose' I am going to have a breakdown.
