I drive a Clio 182 and had a scary revelation last night on just how much I had spent on it in the 18 months/13k miles I've owned it - a sum in excess of £2500.

Of course, some of this is upgrades and preventative maintenance, but it's a startling figure none the less.

This led me on to work out a cost per mile including VED, Insurance and fuel (averaged at 28MPG and 1.35 a litre).

The conclusion is a frankly shocking 51 pence per mile, so I'm curious, what is your car costing you to run?

Company car tax £48/month

Do approx 2000 personal miles a month so that works out at 2.4p a mile

Add fuel at 50mpg say 13p a mile so total 15.4p a mile. Don't think you can beat that even when barging. Being a diesel focus it's much slower than any previous cars but is lovely not having to worry about associated car owning costs. Not very PH but it baffles me why some people opt out of having company cars when the opportunity arises!

It costs me £5,218.60 per year to run my car (MR2 Turbo) smile

Can people include what cars they have - some kind of breakdown would help as well.

The figure seems disproportionately high for a Clio and I'm trying to establish the kind of costs to expect from cars perhaps a little more special.

Don't forget to factor in depreciation too. Usually the biggest cost in running a car.

Why don't you look it up in the members car section? Gives you the full breakdown for those that have completed it.

Car - Mazda 3 MPS 44.6k miles

Bought new for £16,400, probably worth £12k (ish) now.
Done some modifications - £4100
Insurance for 2 years - £960
Maintnance - £1200
Tyres - £720
Fuel - (free i have a fuel card) but if paying its 21ppm
VED - £260 (x2)

So it works out at 47ppm, though i only pay 25ppm, well actually i don't pay a thing as the car allowance covers it with a £568 surplus for last year.

82p, but I do only cover about 4000 miles a year in it. Oh and I'm including estimated depreciation in that figure.

Saxo VTR Mk2 (let the chav comments roll)

Paid £1090, Y reg, 88K miles, FSH, No mods, completely standard. Depriciation should be around £100-£200 but I did not factor that into ownership cost.

Insurance £2472 a year (No NCB, high risk postcode, when took policy out has licence less than a year and was 24)
Tax £190
Fuel @ £1.40/litre getting average 40mpg - £1112.30
MOT - £50
New windscreen - £100
Serviced myself, oil, spark plugs, air and oil filter - £50
Tools, sockets, trolley jack, axle stands etc. - £100
Misc, cleaning products, wiper blades, bulbs etc. - £50

Total £4124.30 - 59 pence per mile

My new (old) Peugeot

VED: £135
Insurance: £650
MOT + Service: £100
Maintenance: £150 (tyres are £60 a pop, something is destined to go wrong)
Fuel: 52-54mpg
Mileage: 12,000
Cost per mile: 20p

Using the calculator here - True Cost of running a car

Still only comes out at 22p per mile / £8.60 a day.

hmm, way too much because I do not do too many miles at the moment.

335i - its done 1500 miles in the last year so about £2 per mile, 911 again I have done about 600 miles in the last 4 or 5 months that I have owned it so about a fiver per mile maybe a bit more.

Not including petrol or insurance for my TVR T350;
Total miles over 3 1/2 years - 19300
Total costs of servicing and maintenance - £21,674
Pence per mile - £1.12

Adding fuel in, averaging the cost at say £1.30 a litre to account for low and high prices over the period and assuming an average mpg of 23 (conservative smile)
£26,632 fuel, servicing etc.
P/per mile - £1.38

I've not included insurance as this varies so much from person to person.
A full breakdown for any interested parties can be found on my profile blog.

Elises are going up in value, so are you saying it cost MORE than 82p a mile but you knocked it down a bit since your car choice was so excellent? wink

I started a thread on this subject last year after working out that my E46 M3 had cost me £39k to cover 38k miles or just over £1 a mile.Certainly an eye opener.

Im not even going to bother finding out what the GTR is costing me.....
