Thinking 330d, any tips?
Discussion
Good choice, just sold mine (E46). Most have swirl flaps which need to be removed before they give problems at about 90,000+ miles, EGRs don't seem to give many problems and are relatively easy to fix anyway.
A good mod (if it hasn't already been done) is to change the breather-filter at the back of the cambox for the latest type. This can prevent turbo failure later in life.
Autoboxes benefit from an oil-change at or around the 100,000 mile mark but make sure this is done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Can someone explain wh the swirl flaps fail and why they were installed in the first place?
Why installed: Emissions control at low revs/idle.Why fail: Because they are constructed badly. They are basically a throttle butterfly, i.e. a flap screwed to a spindle which bisects the manifold branch. Problem is that the screws work loose and then they and possibly the flap itself are ingested since they sit only a couple of inches from the inlet valves.

PS - Don't let anyone misinformed tell you that certain engine sizes do or don't have them, or that it depends on the year or the gearbox type. There's no hard and fast rule. There's also not telling which size (as there's two sizes of flaps and hence two possible specs for the blanks) are installed on a given car, because the manifolds were installed as a complete unit at the factory and to me knowledge no record was kept by BMW as to which style manifold was installed on each car, as they were treated as interchangeable for at least a period.

I assumed it was to control emissions, especially in cities, but having looked at their construction makes me wonder if the engineers assumed they would be removed once bought anyway...

cheers what mpg did you get
On a 400 mile roadtrip from the Midlands to North-West Scotchland I got about 43mpg driving like an eejit - .95 leptons+ where possible and rarely dropped below .8 Superb drive using the tiptronic change most of the way. Garmin track-log showed a peak of 1.28 leptons, IIRC...Commuting in Winter gave the worst mpg - dropped to about 32mpg, but this is with a short, junction-ridden commute of only 9 miles.
Overall 40mpg with a 'progressive' driving style.
Neighbour has (actually, had) a 330i auto slightly older than mine; he struggled to get within 10mpg of the 330d under all conditions, and every time I came across him on the road, he was driving like a granny!
I've got a 2005 e46 330Cd, great car and love it, check for front wishbone bushes, if you can see the wheel move back and forward as it moves or stops they will need replacing.
I remapped mine and is a great car goes well and large brakes means it stops too, I've done a track day and most people out with me couldn't believe it was a diesel. Its averaging 37mpg, get well over 40 on a run but round town isn't great so brings down the average.

54 plate 330cdm, remapped, 37mpg on lots of very short journeys, and mid 40's on motorway runs.

The 330 diesel isn't that much more economical than the 330 petrol. Worth a thought
I have an e91 330i mSport Touring..... Mixed driving..... 23.9mpg over the past 4k miles.
At constant speeds it's ok on the fuel. Any degree of stop start type driving and it's frankly horrendous. It's less economical than my old 997 C2S.
Can't speak if the dervs - but I'd hope they're a bit better!!
Nice creamy engine though!
