OK so it's early days and the car's heavily modified but I can't help think that in the spyshots the new 4 series is the spit of the unsmiling Scorpio. What do you think?

Is there any niche BMW have left unturned!? What the hell is a 4-series? 5 series coupe is a 6 series, 3 series coupe is... a 3 series coupe!

4 series is what they're going to call the 3 series coupe. I think the next 1 series coupe is going to be called 2 series too.

It'll be interesting to see if the M4 will have a twin or tri turbo straight 6. Or will it be exactly the same as the 3 series?

They are just copying those clever marketing guys at Audi who have managed to convince the car buying public that the A5 coupe is some how not just a 2 door A4 and the 5 door A5 is something more than than a hatch back A4.

I have colleagues at work who think they are driving around in a 6 series rival FFS!

Clever bit of product positioning mind.

I had to look up what the term meant! In a way, yes. No harm in it. Hadn't seen the point raised here before. Generates a debate

The notion of the coupe 3 series being called the four predates the a5 - I remember it being 'likely' before the e90 launch.

The 'official' line is to be able to differentiate the models, as the can make the four more interesting when its a standalone model - and no doubt charge more

Except you can get a 4-door A5 now, which is almost identical to the A4.

I expect to see a saloon and estate variant of the 4-series at some point.

That looks to be the 4-series "Gran Coupe" anyway - the back looks a bit big to be a 2 door IMO.

I reckon it's pure marketing, based upon focus groups.

saloon/estate = A4
Convertible/2/5 door "coupe" = A5

They're the same car they don't even give you an different interior to at least maintain the illusion.

So I see the upcoming 4 series in the same way

Saloon/estate = 3 series
Convertible/2/4/5 door "coupe" = 4 series

Hopefully BMW will continue to give you a better/different interior as per the 5 series vs 6 series.
