Driving between Macclesfield and Leek in North Staffordshire on the A523 this morning, quite a nice road to those who know it, very little traffic and I'm looking forward to blowing the cobwebs out of the CTR when I came upon a 60 plate 1.6 focus- bugger thinks me! Nice sunny, dry morning and looking forward to a blast so thought no worries, wait until a nice safe spot for an OT and then I'll be passed it and on my way. Then we enter the NSL bit of the road and the guy really goes for it, I'm talking perfect speed on the corners, tyres bang on the apex of every bend- really pushing the car, never really dropping speed the whole stretch. I keep a respectful distance and think good man- and enjoy my drive. Guy turns off as we get in to Leek and I see that he has got to be 85 if he's a day, with his missus sitting in the passenger seat- guy is grinning ear to ear, obviously really enjoyed his "blast" on a sunny weekend morning!

Really put a smile on my face, really sums up how it does not matter how old you are, or what you drive- a good drive is what being a petrolhead is all about! smile

Rare you get this but nice when it happens. Followed a Honda Accord being driven briskly coming back home from Aberystwyth. Got to the roundabout in Llandeilo to see a man in his 70s. Very impressed

Whooooooo, wait a minute. Is this PH praising old drivers? The same PH who usually say they should be taken off the road once they reach 70 years of age irrespective of ability.

Have you all been on the juice or something ?

Or maybe I have logged into the Age Concern website by mistake.

Edited to add I know some very good elderly drivers who would put some of you young whippersnappers to shame wink

Not all old codgers are bad drivers, not by any means. Tom Delaney was racing into his 90s and I know a number of 70+ year olds who like to give it beans, either in pre-war or modern cars.

There's a few nice back roads near me and back when i had the swift i managed to encourage an impressed smile from a bloke in an RS4 B7 as i was wringing the neck of this thing with him cruising behind in 6th admiring the spectacle. Eventually i'd had enough (well, the brakes were cooked) so decided to let him past and carry on. Love that exhaust note.

I'm not saying that all old drivers are bad, but go for a drive through bexhill on a pension day, and just steer clear of any ageing Honda, rover or micra, or any modern Korean junk box.
Sainsurys car park reminds me of the old PS1 game destruction derby on a Thursday lol.

I have a cunning plan that when I reach old age I shall be buying the requisite Honda/Rover/Kia electric zimmer frame equivalent and making a few subtle modifications.

See if you can keep up! wink

I was quite surprised to see the Queen still driving the other day, must be getting on for 90 odd, fair play to her, can't be many women who still drive at that age

Excellent! I once follwed a Silver civic with 2 silver haired old chaps on the cat and fiddle road (maybe it was the same guy!) i was pushing the 328 fairly hard after overtaking him and he wasnt far behind. Even gave me a cheeky thumbs up when i turned in to the pub!

Couple of old guys complete with PlusFours and white handlebar moustaches were thrashing their two 1920s Bentleys around Le Mans in 2000. One of them had 3 passengers, all in period dress, and hit 120mph on the Mulsanne on "Crazy Friday".

It was the first time my Caterham ever felt insignificant. OK, I could have driven circles around them but for general "deserved to be there" points, they won hands down.
