You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I'm not particularly good at buying used cars, I normally just buy the first thing I see and I've never really spent any major amount of money on anything that wasnt fairly niche anyway (like the TVR)..

Anyway.. I'm looking at the Audi used car network, There a car down the road from me, 2009, lots of toys, 34k miles, £25,000

In the west midlands there's another car, same age a mileage within a few hundred, different colour (Silver with beige interior) slightly more internal toys, but less flash wheels (17's rather than 19's). £19,000

now £6k seems a lot of money for having a dark colour and black leather. Is cream and beige really that undesirable? It's not top of my list but I'll happily take it to save £6000! Same goes for the smaller wheels, end result is cheaper rubber anyway and a smoother ride! ETA the cheaper car is silver rather than black.

I cant think the price difference is all down to a couple of hundred miles.

There's no major bit of kit on the "down south" car that makes it worth that much more that I can fathom, also the dealers seem a bit slack with entering the details on the website with regard to all the options and toys anyway, they've omitted to enter the 4 zone climate control on both of them, yet they definitely both have it according to the photos, likewise they've missed heated seats off one and you can clearly see the heated seat buttons on the dash!

If it was to independent dealers I'd put it down to different opinions about the true value of the car, I'd have through main dealers had a more rigid pricing system..

Any opinions?

Phone and ask why there is a similar car cheaper. If they can't justify it. Get a train and save 6 grand! lol

smile I WAS going to do that next week, honest... but I'm just expecting a load of dealer flim flam, "Our car has got adamatium piston rings" or "Our car has got kryptonite wheel nuts"

Or some other bull-plop! smile

Ill call on Tuesday and see what they say.

yes

I'm based in Glasgow, have travelled to Eastbourne and Manchester (twice) for my last 3 cars - have saved thousands each time yet got similar trade-in bids.

I have no idea why the difference, don't be afraid of travelling to get a better deal!

If it's in the same network won't they bring it down for you?

I live in the South West and car prices down here seem to be MUCH higher than elsewhere in the country. When I first came down here I was shocked at the difference but I guess I've got used to it over the years and just suffer it.

Only if it's te same dealer group (in some instances)

One Audi dealer is not obliged to trade a car to another, and the local dealer certainly wouldnt want to sell it in preference to their own car!

I did ask that, apparently not, I guess if it was the same chain of Audi franchises, Sytner for example, it could be done, but the chap I spoke to said it couldn't be done, when I first spoke to them I was looking at a car in Swansea, and he was very quick to say he couldnt arrange it to come to him.

Really surprised at you? For £6k I'd be up there like a shot having a look. It's only Oxfordshire to West Midlands. If it were Glasgow I'd still buy it unseen after a (written) complete description or an independent inspection.

Why do you need 'your' dealer to bring it down? On top of all the above as it's an approved Audi from a franchised deler it's under Audi warranty as well? Really surprised at your reticence.

Very true!

The only thing I can think of besides regional variation is the colour...

I've since found another one of very similar spec age and miles, that's £5100 cheaper and this one is just up the road from me at another main dealer, and it's got a black interior rather than beige...

£5100 doesn't justify a dark exterior colour... and thats the only real difference.

It does if that is the only colour that sells.

I can understand if it was puke green driving the price down or something spectacularly rare driving it up, but we're talking Audi's in Silver and dark grey/black.

Silver with Beige Interior (18K)
Silver with Black Interior (19K)
Gunmetal/Dark grey with Black Interior (25k)

Having spent the day in the classifieds I'm so confused with it all I might just go and buy another Mondeo!

Buy the car that appeals most in terms of what you want and what you think is it's worth

haha that's precisely what I'm trying NOT to do this time, this is a "head" car, not a heart one...

Otherwise I'll just end up paying the "screen" price for the first thing I see, which is my impulsive, impatient, car-buying problem! smile

Obviously there are.

A pitch in central London is going to cost probably 3x more than in central Birmingham and those costs have to be covered.

Also I am one of many who want cars in certain colours so they are worth more (to me) I'm currently looking for a black Supra and they fetch £1k more than silver ones and this is on a £3k car !

However it's also true the wider you cast your net the more variation there is in prices.

When I sell a car I make sure it's comparable to others within a 60 mile radius (On AutoTrader) as most people don't travel far. When I buy a car I find all the "bargains" are outside that radius and hence I travel frequently 100 miles to buy my next car.

Since when did you buy a used A8 with your head? wink .... Ok marginally more sensible than a new one!

Presume your looking at the one at Halesowen Audi & Oxford Audi ... And one others

The 17' s on Halesowens will hurt the value, because they do look a bit st! Grey interior is a negative too, both easily mark it down £2k
