What could be wrong with my car stereo?

The radio in my old Lexus has started to play up. It has an intermittent fault where it just goes silent.

It is not turning off, and it is still tuned into radio stations but i can't hear anything unless i turn it ALL the way up and then it is still really quiet

So, I have ruled out a fuse issue. Turning it off and back on again does not fix it, it just randomly goes quiet on me and then starts to work again all of it's own accord.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like the stereo itself. If a speaker was earthing out you shouldn't be able to hear anything at all

I would also say its the amplifier, maybe there is a radio the same on Ebay.

It's a dry joint in the amplifier circuit. As it warms up, its resistance increases and mutes the output. When it cools down, it's OK again. Bugger to find, though.

I did recently cut the wire to the subwoofer as the speaker was blown and would just make little farty noises when the music had a good bass line.

That was a few weeks ago, and i have made sure wire is not shorting out so i don't think that is the issue..might have to investigate further..
