Hi

I have a younger brother of 21 years old... He has 8k to spend on a car...

After looking at a BMW 330, he has come to the conclusion that insurance is to expensive... (£3000 fully comp)

Then he looked at a mark 5 golf gti, and again insurance is to expensive...

He's now stuck, and not sure what to look for.

What would you guys and girls advise?

He wants something sporty, respectable and with some street cred but at the same time affordable...

Over to the ph massive to help...

Thx in advance....

How about a polo 1.4 diesel, cheap, reliable, good on the gas and cheapy insurance? Get a nice one for 5 or 6 k, 55 mpg, etc.

yes

Your brother needs to find better insurance quotes.

I'm betting he's with Admiral/Elephant.

So he looks at a sales rep BMW 3-series and a shopping trolly VW Golf?

You do realise that at 21 a BMW or a Golf GTi covers exactly those bases for his peers?

It's a BMW convertible he had been looking at, don't think that's a sales reps car, but each person has an opinion...

I'm in the same situation really. I've been looking at golf gti's, golf r32, Elise s1/2, vx220, rx8 etc.

I've been quoted less than £1000 for insurance on the golf gti and just over £1000 for the r32.

8 Grand?

There's a lot of cars which fall into his budget, but ideally he's going to be better off buying something much cheaper, gaining some more NCB and perhaps buying something sportier in a years' time?

What cars has he had previously? It's relevant to know what would be a decent step-up from what he has already gained experience in.

Focus RS, Porsche 968, Alfa 147 GTA, Clio V6, Elise, Alpina B3, Nissan 350Z?

I'm 23 and could insure any of them if I put the hours in. Lots of phone calls and research on owner's forums often gets better results than a couple of comparison sites.

A classic has to be the way here, as long as he's not doing galactic mileage, use specialist classic insurers you find in the back of classic & Sportscar type mags, at 21 i wanted:
Series 3 XJ6
3.6 XJS
E30 325i sport
Audi coupe (fake quattro)
Sierra cosworth (sapphire should be in price range)- insurance might still be a bit sticky
something american? C3 vette or early/mid 90's camaro or Fox body mustang
Datsun 240/260Z - might need work
4 litre Chimaera, early model
S2/S3 tvr (best you can find)
944 S2 not sure if these qualify for sensible insurance yet.
etc etc.
I suspect some of these may still be considered 'cool'.
