Hi guys, I'm looking at getting a cheap car (£1000) to run as a weekend toy alongside my 330i. It's a 1986 car which means my insurers won't look at it, 1987 is apparently the oldest they go. I'm 20 with 3years NCB. I've found a few of the classic insurance places want me to be 21 or 25 even. I was also wondering about mirroring my 3 year NCB. In a bit of a rush, car is on eBay ending friday evening.

Any advice on where to go, cheapest is £1300 from those bds at Admiral who I vowed never to use again.

Where do all you young classic drivers go?

Footman James - call their classic line don't bother with the website etc. They cover my younger brother (18) on a modified MG Midget for very little - his own policy etc, none of this fronting business!

Oh thanks for that, I'd heard they had changed and don't touch under 21s now. I'll phone them in the morning.

I'm currently 21, but when I was 20 I insured my 1986 2.8 Capri on a classic policy with flux direct for £800. Give them a go see what they say!

You heard right but following pressure from owners clubs they are starting to be able to deal on under 21s again.

Premiums are still way higher for young folks than beforehand due to the increase in younger folk buying classics soley for insurance reason and putting the claim costs up by crashing 'em.

Just phoned Footman James, who say they have no underwriter to provide cover to anyone under the age of 25. Starting to annoy me now. Classic car I've wanted for a long time, pops up for sale locally, and I can't get insured on it, yet my 330i I can insure for a decent price.

Try classicline - http://www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk/classic-car/

I have both the Jensen and Stag insured with them - age was still an issue for me last year when insuring the Jensen, despite being 27! Bumped into a classicline man at a show - he sorted me out.

Thanks for that, I've given up now. Decided enough is enough. I'm going to spend the money improving the BMW instead.
