Im sorry if this has been covered already but I have only just joined the site. My girlfriend has the 140 toyota celica vvti 1.8, 2000 reg. for our anniversary i bought her a short ram induction kit, i must admit it was an ebay special as wer not going for power gains here just a bit of engine noise. The kit had the right amout of connections for the various tubes that come out of the vvti air box...but no instructions. I fitted the kit ( having fitted my own on my DC5) and after a couple of drives the ecy adjusted and the car ran fine. After about a week the engine managent light has come on. I disconnected the battery for about 10 mins and made sure everything was connected, but again, the light has come on. Can anyone point me.in the right direction or had this problem in the past? Even a link or email with instructions on fitting may help.....? Thanks.

Have you plugged the car in to read the fault code?

Celica-Club forums will help you.

The pre-2002 VVTi 140s had the piston ring issue too, so check the oil regularly if you're not already!

I got the impression that these cars were particularly sensitive when you disconnected the vacuum hoses to the standard airbox, but it turned out there were just a majority of owners who were essentially doing it wrong.

No pipe should be left disconnected, unless it is sealed off.

Cheers so far guys. Every pipe that was on the air box is now connected to the induction kit. There is obe unused connection on the kit itself but I have plugged this with a cap.

The oil did seem to go down v v quick. shes owned the car about 2 months and we had to put in over a litre of oil last week?

The engine management light came on within a week or so of the induction kit going on...? Im guessing it wouldnt have to be a toyota diagnostic check? I dont have anything myself to find out to error code?

The engine won't really benefit from the induction kit, the standard airbox is more than adequate. You really only fit one for the noise.

The oil consumption does hint at the piston rings (sometimes called oil-control rings). It will only get worse, to the point where you'll have to factor in the oil as part of your weekly shop... Thicker oil may help in the short term, but the problem is well documented.

For what it's worth, I did fit an induction kit to my Celica, purely for the noise. I never had any problem with EML's.

The kit was purely fitted for a bit of engine noise, she doesnt like the drone of an exhaust but loves the induction.

Would it matter what way round the pipes are connected? there a 4 small pipes that came off various places of the air box and there are 4 small connector ports in a row on the induction kit...? I havent dobe these in any particular order.......?

Im guessing the piston ring issue isnt a cheap one to fix either? prob more than the car is worth...?

We have the 1.8 VVT-Li engines in a lot of our Elises (speaking for us Lotus guys here!). The engine management system on our engines is v.sensitive to changes in induction/exhausts and the MIL comes on at the slightest thing at times. Mine came on last week when I blipped the throttle when the engine was cold causing an overly rich mixture for a split second. It could well be just the slight change in airflow that has caused the light to come on but everything is ok.

Have a look using an ODB reader (easy and cheap to DIY). You may find that you might have to just leave it on.

Photo's of the induction kit would help.

The piston ring issue is almost certainly more costly to fix than the car is worth. Hence why the company directors' old steed - a 2000 reg 140 VVTi - now resides in the company car park, gathering dirt frown

Ill get some pics taken tonight of tge kit and wires etc to post up tomorrow......
